Writing Authoritative Content Perplexity Will Want to Cite
Authority comes from expertise you can show, facts you can back up and clear writing. This guide shows how to write pages that make strong Perplexity sources.

Authoritative content for Perplexity is content that a careful researcher would trust: written by someone with real expertise, built on specific and checkable facts, and organised so the answer is easy to find. Perplexity does not publish how it scores authority, but pages with these qualities are consistently useful as sources.
Show who wrote it and why they know
Add a short author line with a real name and relevant experience. “Written by Marie Dupont, a structural engineer with 15 years in residential renovation” gives readers a reason to trust the page. Link to an author page or LinkedIn profile. Avoid invented personas; they undermine trust if discovered.
Use first-hand knowledge
The strongest pages say things only an insider could say. A wedding photographer might explain how light changes in a specific venue during different seasons. A freight broker might describe exactly which documents slow down customs at a given port. This kind of detail is hard to copy and useful to quote.
Back up claims with sources
When you state a fact that is not your own, link to where it comes from: a government page, a standards body, a manufacturer’s documentation or a respected industry publication. When the fact is your own, explain how you know it, for example “based on the 140 renovation quotes we issued last year”. Never invent figures.
Structure each page around one question
A clear structure makes it easy for any reader, human or AI, to pull out the right part:
- Open with a two- or three-sentence direct answer.
- Follow with the reasoning or detail, under clear headings.
- Add a short list of steps, factors or options where it helps.
- Close with caveats: when the answer changes, and what to check.
See structured content for AI search optimization for more layout ideas.
Be precise with language
Compare “We offer competitive pricing” with “Standard boiler servicing costs €95 including travel within Lyon”. The second is a fact. Replace vague claims with numbers, names, places and dates wherever you honestly can.
Keep it current and say so
Perplexity reads the live web, so out-of-date pages can be a weakness. Add a visible “last updated” date to pages with prices, rules or product details, and actually review them. If a regulation changed, update the page and note what changed.
Content types that tend to work well
- Explainers on how something works in your field.
- Cost guides with real price ranges and what drives them.
- Comparison pages that are fair to alternatives.
- Checklists buyers can use before making a decision.
- Original data you collected yourself, explained with its method and limits.
Authority beyond your own site
Your own pages are only part of the story. Being quoted in trade press, listed in serious directories or interviewed on industry podcasts tells readers that others recognise your expertise. Pursue these through honest outreach, not paid link schemes. Our page on increasing brand trust signals for LLMs covers this in more depth.
A quick self-test
Before publishing, ask a colleague who does not know the topic to read only the first paragraph and say what they learned. If they cannot repeat a clear fact, the opening needs work. Then ask an expert in your team whether anything on the page is vague, outdated or unsupported.
