Perplexity
Structured content is content organised so that each part has a clear job: a direct answer at the top, descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists for steps, tables for comparisons and schema markup for key facts. This makes it easier for AI assistants to find the exact passage that answers a question and to quote it correctly.
Why Structure Helps AI
When an assistant reads a page during live search, it looks for the part that answers the user’s question. A long wall of text forces it to guess where the answer starts and ends. A page with a clear heading like “How long does delivery take to Belgium?” followed by a one-sentence answer makes the job simple. Structure reduces the risk of being misquoted or skipped.
The Answer-First Layout
Start each important page with two or three sentences that directly answer its main question. Then expand. For example, a page on “Can I return a custom-made sofa?” should open with the actual policy, not with the company history. Readers in a hurry benefit too.
A good test: if someone read only the first two sentences of the page, would they have a correct, useful answer? If not, rewrite the opening until they would. The rest of the page can then add conditions, exceptions and examples.
Headings That Mirror Questions
- Use one main topic per page.
- Write
h2andh3headings that say what the section answers, such as “Price for a two-bedroom flat” instead of “Our offer”. - Keep the heading order logical; do not skip levels for styling.
Lists, Steps and Tables
Numbered steps
For any process, such as booking, installing or applying, use an ordered list. Assistants often turn steps into instructions, and a clean list is easy to reuse.
Bullet lists
Use them for features, requirements or what is included. Keep each item short and specific.
Tables
For comparisons, such as plan A vs plan B, or sizes and prices, a simple HTML table is clearer than prose. Keep tables in real HTML, not as images, so they can be read.
FAQ Sections
Add a short FAQ to key pages with real questions from customers. Keep answers to two or three sentences. Avoid inventing questions just to add keywords. See FAQ schema for voice and AI for markup tips.
Schema Markup
Schema markup, usually written as JSON-LD, labels facts in a machine-readable way. Common types:
OrganizationorLocalBusinessfor company details.ProductandOfferfor items, prices and availability.Articlewith author and date for guides.FAQPageandHowTowhere they fit the content.
Markup should match what is visible on the page. It helps machines understand your content, but it does not guarantee that any assistant will use or cite it. More in schema markup for AI.
Glossaries and Definitions
If your field has jargon, a glossary page with one clear definition per term can become a useful reference. Each definition should start with a plain one-sentence explanation.
Quick Structure Checklist
- Direct answer in the first lines.
- One topic per page.
- Question-style headings.
- Lists for steps and features, tables for comparisons.
- Short FAQ with real questions.
- Matching schema markup.
- Visible author and updated date.
