Answer Engine Optimization: How to Write Pages AI Can Quote
Answer engine optimization is mostly a writing skill. Learn the page patterns that make your content easy for AI assistants to quote and cite.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) means shaping your content so AI assistants and answer features can lift a clear, correct answer from it. In practice it is mostly about writing: put the answer first, use the buyer’s own question as a heading, and include specific facts instead of general claims. Technical work matters too, but good writing is where most pages fall short.
Pattern 1: Answer first, then explain
Assistants look for a passage that directly answers the question. Many web pages bury the answer in the fourth paragraph.
Before: “At our clinic, we believe every patient deserves personalised care. Founded in 2009, our team has grown…”
After: “A first physiotherapy session at our Lyon clinic lasts 45 minutes and costs €55. We assess the injury, start treatment and give you exercises to do at home.”
The second version can be quoted almost word for word.
Pattern 2: Use real questions as headings
Write headings the way customers phrase questions: “How long does a website redesign take?” rather than “Our process”. You can find these questions in sales emails, support tickets and the “People also ask” box in search results. Each heading should be followed by a short, complete answer.
Pattern 3: Be specific
Specific details make content useful and quotable:
- Numbers you can stand behind: prices, durations, sizes, capacities.
- Named places: the cities or regions you serve.
- Named audiences: “for freelance designers”, “for clinics with two to five practitioners”.
- Named integrations or standards: “works with Shopify and WooCommerce”.
Pattern 4: One topic per page
A page that tries to cover every service at once gives assistants a weak signal for each one. Separate pages for “roof repair”, “gutter cleaning” and “roof insulation” each have a better chance of matching a specific question.
Pattern 5: Lists and tables for comparisons
When buyers compare, assistants like structured information. A short list of “what is included in each plan” or a table comparing options is easier to summarise than long paragraphs. Keep comparisons fair, including where a competitor may suit some buyers better. Honest comparisons are more likely to be trusted. See product comparisons for AI answers for examples.
Pattern 6: Show who is speaking
Add an author name, role and update date to expert content. A guide on tax deadlines written by a named accountant gives readers, and systems that judge source quality, a reason to trust it.
The technical layer
Writing comes first, but a few technical steps support it:
- Make sure pages are crawlable and load as text.
- Add FAQ or Organization schema where it matches the visible content. Read FAQ schema for voice and AI for details.
- Keep URLs and titles clear and descriptive.
A quick rewrite exercise
- Pick your most important service page.
- Write down the single question it should answer.
- Rewrite the first two sentences so they answer it with one specific fact.
- Add three question headings with short answers below them.
- Remove any sentence that would make sense on a competitor’s site too.
- Read the page aloud and cut anything a customer would skip.
How Keboost helps
Keboost shows which questions assistants are answering in your market and who they quote. It then creates focused, answer-first content and distributes it so ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot can find and cite it.
