AI SEO Explained: What Happens Between a Prompt and an Answer
Follow a single question through an AI assistant, step by step, and see exactly where your business can be found or missed.

When someone asks an AI assistant a question, it interprets the request, draws on what it learned in training, often searches the web, picks a handful of sources and writes a summary. AI SEO is about being useful and easy to find at each of those steps. Here is the journey of one prompt, and what it means for your business.
Our Example Prompt
Imagine a shop owner types into an assistant: “What’s a good booking system for a small hair salon in Manchester that takes deposits?” Let us follow it.
Step 1: The Assistant Interprets the Question
The model works out what is really being asked. Here it spots several needs: a booking tool, for salons, small size, UK location, deposit feature. If it searches the web, it may rewrite the prompt into several shorter queries, such as “salon booking software deposits UK”.
What this means for you: your pages should name these specifics plainly. If your salon software takes deposits, say “takes deposits” in words, not only as an icon on a pricing table.
Step 2: It Checks What It Already Knows
The model has background knowledge from its training data. If your brand was widely and consistently described in public sources before training, the model may already associate you with “salon booking”. If not, it may not know you exist.
What this means for you: long-term visibility depends on being discussed across the web over time, in reviews, directories and articles. Nobody can add you to training data directly.
Step 3: It Searches the Live Web
Many assistants search before answering. ChatGPT can browse, Perplexity searches and shows its sources, Copilot uses Bing, and Google’s AI features draw on Google’s index. The results that come back are often a mix of brand sites, review platforms, comparison articles and forums.
What this means for you: your site must be crawlable and indexed by the major search engines, and you need to appear on the third-party pages that rank for your category. See how AI models use external sources and citations.
Step 4: It Picks Which Sources to Trust
From the search results, the assistant selects passages that answer the question clearly and seem reliable. Pages that state facts directly, match other sources and look current are easier to use. A page that buries the answer, contradicts itself or hides key facts in images is easier to skip.
What this means for you: write short, factual passages that answer one thing each. Keep your facts identical across your site and profiles.
Step 5: It Writes the Answer
Finally the model writes a summary. It might list three or four booking tools with one line each, perhaps with source links. Which brands appear, and in what order, can vary from run to run. There is no fixed “position one” like on a classic results page.
What this means for you: measure how often you appear across many runs and prompts, not a single answer. Also check that what it says about you is accurate.
Where Businesses Usually Get Lost
- At step 1: the site never mentions the specific need (deposits, Manchester, salons).
- At step 3: crawlers are blocked, or the brand is missing from the review sites that rank.
- At step 4: prices or features differ between the website and directory listings.
- At step 5: the brand appears, but with an old price or a wrong description.
