The Key Metrics for an AI Search Optimization Dashboard
Which numbers belong on an AI search dashboard, which are noise, and how to lay them out so you can see what to do next at a glance.

An AI search optimization dashboard should answer three questions at a glance: are we mentioned, are we described correctly, and is it bringing business? The core metrics are mention rate, share of voice against competitors, accuracy of facts, citations of your pages, and visits or leads from AI tools. Everything else is detail you open only when needed.
Metric 1: Mention rate
The share of tracked prompts where your brand appears in the answer. Show it overall and per assistant. This is your main visibility number. Because answers vary between runs, track it as a trend line over months rather than a single figure.
Metric 2: Share of voice
Out of all brand mentions across your prompts, how many are yours compared with each competitor? This puts your mention rate in context. Appearing in 30% of prompts is good news in a crowded market and weak news in a niche where you are the leader.
Metric 3: Average position or prominence
When you are mentioned, are you the first suggestion or the last in a list? A simple prominence score helps separate “named” from “recommended”.
Metric 4: Accuracy
The share of answers where your key facts are correct: name, offer, prices, locations. This is easy to overlook and often the quickest to improve. Wrong facts can cost you sales even when you are mentioned.
Metric 5: Citations
How many times your own pages are linked as sources, mostly from Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT when it searches. Pair it with a list of which pages are cited, so you know which content works.
Metric 6: AI referral traffic and conversions
From your web analytics, visits that come from AI domains, and what those visitors do. Also watch branded search volume, since many people read an AI answer and then search for your name. This connects visibility with business results. For setup ideas, see AI search brand performance tracking.
Laying out the dashboard
- Top row: mention rate, share of voice and AI referral visits, each with a trend arrow.
- Middle: a table of prompts with won, lost and never-mentioned status.
- Bottom: accuracy issues and top cited sources.
Keep it to one screen. If you need to scroll to understand the situation, there is too much on it.
Metrics to leave off
- Raw counts of prompts checked. Activity is not a result.
- Single-run results presented as final.
- Unexplained composite scores you cannot trace back to prompts.
Setting targets honestly
Targets should be about direction and effort, not promises. “Improve accuracy on our top 20 prompts this quarter” and “publish answer pages for the five prompts where we never appear” are realistic. “Be the top pick in ChatGPT by June” is not something anyone can control. Our timeline guide helps set expectations.
Segmenting the dashboard
A single average can hide important differences. Add simple filters if your business has distinct parts: by country if you sell in France and Belgium, by product line if you sell both hardware and services, or by buyer stage, separating “what is” questions from “which one should I buy” questions. Buying-stage prompts usually deserve the most attention.
Building it yourself vs using a tool
You can build a basic version with a spreadsheet and your analytics. It works for a small prompt list. As prompts, assistants and competitors grow, a tool keeps checks consistent and saves many hours each month.
