The most useful metrics for brand performance in AI search are mention rate, share of voice against competitors, position in answers, accuracy of descriptions, citation rate and AI-referred traffic. Track them on a fixed set of prompts across several assistants, review monthly and focus on trends rather than single results, because AI answers naturally vary.

Set Up Your Prompt Panel First

Metrics are only comparable if the questions stay the same. Build a panel of 20 to 50 prompts that reflect real buying questions, split by type: category (“best CRM for estate agents”), comparison (“[brand] vs [competitor]”), problem (“how to stop leads going cold”) and brand (“is [brand] good for small teams?”). Keep the panel stable, adding new prompts only occasionally.

Metric 1: Mention Rate

Formula: prompts where your brand is mentioned ÷ total prompts tested. Track it per assistant and overall. This is your headline visibility number.

Metric 2: Share of Voice

Formula: your mentions ÷ total mentions of you and your tracked competitors. If you appear 12 times and three competitors appear 48 times combined, your share is 20%. It shows relative strength in your category.

Metric 3: Average Position

When assistants list several options, note where you appear. Being first in a list of five is different from being fifth. Record the position and average it across prompts where you are mentioned.

Metric 4: Description Accuracy

Score each mention: correct, partly correct or wrong. Track the percentage of correct mentions. Rising visibility with poor accuracy is a warning sign.

Metric 5: Sentiment

Label each mention as positive, neutral or negative. A simple three-way split is enough for most teams.

Metric 6: Citation Rate

For assistants that show sources, such as Perplexity or AI search modes, count how often your own URLs are cited. This shows whether your content, not just your name, is being used.

Metric 7: AI-Referred Traffic

In your analytics tool, look for visits from AI assistant domains where they pass referral data. It will not capture everything, since many users read the answer without clicking, but it shows direction.

Reporting Tips

  • Use a one-page monthly summary: mention rate, share of voice, accuracy and two or three notable changes.
  • Show trends over at least three months before drawing conclusions.
  • Split results by assistant, since performance often differs between them.
  • Link each change in metrics to actions taken, such as new pages or press coverage.
  • Do not promise targets like “50% share of voice by June”. Set improvement goals and review them.

For a one-off reputation check rather than ongoing metrics, see auditing your brand in AI chatbots. For tools, read AI brand mention monitoring tools.

A Simple Monthly Report Template

  • Headline: overall mention rate and change since last month.
  • Competitors: share of voice table for your tracked rivals.
  • Accuracy: number of wrong or outdated statements found and fixed.
  • Wins: prompts where you newly appear.
  • Losses: prompts where you dropped out, with a likely reason.
  • Next actions: the three tasks planned for the coming month.

Keep the same format every month so trends are easy to spot at a glance.
