AI Not Recommending Your Business? How to Find and Fix the Cause

If AI assistants never recommend your business, there is usually a findable reason: they cannot read your site, they do not understand what you offer, or they see little independent evidence about you. Diagnosing which one applies is the fastest way to improve your chances. No one can force a recommendation, but most causes can be fixed.

First, Confirm the Problem

Before changing anything, test properly. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot the same five to ten buyer questions, such as “best wedding photographer in Bristol” or “accounting software for a small charity”. Use a fresh chat each time and note the results. Sometimes a business is mentioned for some phrasings and not others, which already narrows the cause.

Cause 1: Crawlers Cannot Reach Your Site

Symptoms: Perplexity and browsing answers never cite your pages, even for questions only you answer.

Checks:

• Open your robots.txt and look for rules blocking AI or search crawlers.
• Check whether important text loads only through JavaScript or behind a login.
• Confirm your site is indexed in Google and Bing; Copilot relies on Bing.

Cause 2: Your Site Does Not Say Clearly What You Do

Symptoms: when asked directly about you, the assistant gives a vague or wrong description.

Fix: make your homepage and service pages state plainly what you offer, for whom and where. “Commercial cleaning for offices in Manchester” is far clearer than “Excellence in every space”. Add an FAQ that uses your customers’ own words.

Cause 3: Little Independent Evidence

Symptoms: competitors with weaker products appear, and the sources cited are review sites, directories or articles where you are absent.

Fix: look at which sources the assistants cite for your prompts. Get listed in the relevant directories, encourage honest reviews on the platforms your customers use, and pitch useful stories or expert comments to trade publications.

Cause 4: Inconsistent Facts

Symptoms: assistants mix up your address, give old prices or confuse you with a similarly named company.

Fix: list every place your business details appear and make them match. Use the same business name, address, phone, opening hours and description everywhere.

Cause 5: You Are Targeting the Wrong Questions

Symptoms: you appear for niche prompts but not broad ones.

Fix: this is often normal. A small firm may never appear for “best law firm in London” but can appear for “employment lawyer for start-ups in Shoreditch”. Focus on the specific prompts where you are a strong fit.

Avoid quick fixes that look tempting: buying reviews, posting fake forum recommendations or paying anyone who claims to insert you into AI training data.
