If an AI assistant says it does not know your business, it usually means there is too little clear, consistent information about you on the web, or the assistant cannot read what exists. The fix is to make your business easy to find: open access to your site, publish clear facts, complete your listings and earn mentions elsewhere. Newer businesses often face this, and it improves with steady work.

Why AI might not know you

  • You are new. Training data has a cut-off date, so recent businesses may be missing from what the model learned.
  • Few mentions exist. If only your own site talks about you, assistants have little to go on.
  • Your site is hard to read. Content inside images, heavy scripts or blocked by robots.txt may be invisible to crawlers.
  • Your name is ambiguous. A common word or a name shared with another company can confuse the picture.

Step 1: test properly

Ask more than one assistant, and phrase the question in different ways: your brand name, your brand plus city, and a buyer question like “who makes handmade leather bags in Porto”. Some assistants answer from training only, others search the web. If browsing assistants find you but others do not, the issue is mostly about time and wider mentions.

Step 2: open the door

Check that your robots.txt does not block the crawlers you want, that key pages are indexed in Google and Bing, and that your main text is real HTML, not only images. Copilot relies on Bing, so submitting your site in Bing Webmaster Tools is a simple win.

Step 3: introduce yourself clearly

Write an “about” page that answers in plain sentences: what the business is called, what it does, who it serves, where it is based, when it started and who runs it. Use Organization structured data with the same details. Our page on entity optimization explains why this helps AI tools tell you apart from others.

Step 4: claim your listings

Create or update profiles on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn and the directories your industry uses. A new café might use Tripadvisor and local food guides. A software startup might use G2 or Capterra. Make every profile match your about page word for word on the key facts.

Step 5: get talked about

Third-party mentions tell AI tools that others recognise you. Realistic first steps include a local news story about your launch, a guest article in a trade publication, a podcast interview, membership in a professional association with a public directory, or a partner listing your business on their site. Avoid shortcuts like buying mentions or posting about yourself under fake names.

Step 6: answer the questions your buyers ask

Create pages that match real questions in your niche. When an assistant searches the web, a page titled and written as a direct answer is easier to find and quote.

Step 7: be patient and keep checking

Browsing assistants can pick up changes once pages are indexed. Training-based answers change when models are updated, which you do not control. Re-test monthly. For more background, read how large language models discover brands.
