AI Content Optimization: Improving Pages You Already Have
You don’t always need new content. How to review and improve existing pages so AI assistants can understand, trust and cite them.

AI content optimization often starts with pages you already have. Many websites hold useful information that AI assistants miss because it is buried, vague, outdated or spread across overlapping pages. Improving those pages, by leading with clear answers, adding specific facts and merging duplicates, is usually faster than writing from scratch.
Step 1: Choose Which Pages to Optimize First
Do not try to fix the whole site at once. Pick ten pages using three filters:
- Business value: pages for your main services or best-selling products.
- Question match: pages that should answer questions buyers ask AI assistants.
- Current gaps: topics where assistants name competitors or give wrong facts about you.
Step 2: Rewrite the Opening
Read the first 50 words of each page. Do they answer what the page is about? A garden design company’s page might open with “Passion for outdoor spaces since 2005.” A better opening: “We design and build small city gardens in Manchester, from £4,000 for a courtyard redesign to full landscaping projects.” The second version gives an assistant something precise to use.
Step 3: Add the Missing Facts
Compare each page with the questions customers ask. Common gaps include:
- Price ranges or what affects the price.
- Timelines and availability.
- Areas served or shipping regions.
- Who the offer is for and not for.
- Differences from alternatives.
Step 4: Merge and Prune Overlapping Pages
Three thin blog posts about the same topic weaken each other. Combine them into one strong page, redirect the old URLs, and update internal links. Delete or update pages with outdated offers, old prices or discontinued products, since these can be repeated by AI tools.
Step 5: Improve Structure
- Use headings that reflect real questions.
- Break long paragraphs into one idea each.
- Turn steps and criteria into lists, and comparisons into simple tables.
- Add an FAQ block for short follow-up questions.
Our content structure checklist walks through this in detail.
Step 6: Update Signals of Trust
Add or refresh the author name, a “last updated” date, links to supporting sources and, where relevant, short customer quotes that you have permission to use. Update structured data so it matches the new content.
Step 7: Re-Check After Re-Crawl
Request re-indexing in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. After a few weeks, ask the same questions in AI assistants that search the web and compare with your notes. Changes are not guaranteed, but you will see which edits seem to help.
A Before-and-After Summary
Before: a vague opening, no prices, three overlapping posts, no update date. After: a clear first sentence, a price range, one merged guide with a FAQ, a named author and a current date. The page is now more useful for people and much easier for AI tools to read. For broader context, see what AI search optimization is.
How Often to Review
Set a simple schedule. Review your top ten pages every six months, and any page with prices, rules or product details whenever those change. Keep a short changelog so you know what was updated and when.
