The Best Content Formats for AI Assistants to Read and Cite
You cannot upload content into an AI model’s training, but you can publish it in formats that are easy to crawl, understand and quote. Here is what works.

There is no special file format that puts your content into an AI model’s training data, and no one can submit it there for you. What you can control is how readable your public content is. Plain HTML text with clear headings, short paragraphs, lists, tables and FAQs is the format that AI crawlers and search-based assistants read and quote most reliably.
First, what “training data” really means
AI models are trained by their developers on large collections of text, much of it from the public web. Businesses do not choose what goes in. Many assistants also search the web live when answering, which is where your pages can be read and cited today. So the practical goal is simple: publish clear, accessible content on the open web, and let both training and live search pick it up where they do. Our article on how AI models find information explains both routes.
Formats that work well
HTML text on a normal web page
This is the foundation. Text that loads in the page’s HTML is easy for crawlers to read. Content that only appears after complex scripts run, or after a user clicks, may be missed.
Clear heading structure
Use one main heading, then section headings that describe what follows. Question-style headings (“How long does delivery take to Belgium?”) match how people ask assistants.
Short paragraphs with one idea each
A paragraph that answers one question in two or three sentences is easy to extract. Long blocks that mix several topics are harder to quote accurately.
Lists and steps
Numbered steps for processes and bullet lists for features or requirements are simple to summarise. A recipe site, a software help centre and a plumbing company can all benefit.
Tables for comparisons and specs
Product dimensions, plan comparisons, opening hours by location: tables keep facts organised. Use real HTML tables or clear lists, not images of tables.
FAQ sections
Short question-and-answer pairs that reflect real customer questions. Add FAQ schema only when the questions and answers are visible on the page.
Transcripts and summaries
If you publish videos or podcasts, add a text transcript or a written summary. Audio and video alone are much harder for text-based systems to use.
Formats to use with care
- PDFs: crawlers can read many PDFs, but key facts are safer on a web page too.
- Images of text: menus, price lists and infographics need a text version.
- Content behind logins or forms: gated content is not available to public crawlers.
- Machine-generated filler: large volumes of thin pages add little and can weaken trust in your site.
Structured data as a helper
Schema markup (in JSON-LD) labels facts like your organisation name, address, products and FAQs. It helps machines interpret your pages, but it does not replace visible content. For implementation details, see JSON-LD for company information. Some sites also publish an llms.txt file as a simple guide to their key pages; it is a newer, informal convention, so treat it as optional.
A quick format audit
- Open your top five pages and disable images. Is the key information still there as text?
- Check that each page has a clear title and logical headings.
- Find any facts that only exist in a PDF, image or video, and add them as text.
- Add a short FAQ where buyers commonly have questions.
