How to Test and Measure Structured Data for AI Visibility
Adding structured data is easy. Knowing whether it helped is harder. Here are the tools and a simple method to test its effect on AI visibility.

Structured data tools fall into two jobs: checking that your markup is correct, and measuring whether your visibility changes. No tool can tell you that schema alone caused an AI assistant to mention you, because many factors are involved. But a simple before-and-after method, using the right tools, can show whether your overall changes are working.
Tools for checking correctness
- Schema.org validator: checks syntax and shows how your markup is read. Free.
- Google Rich Results Test: shows which rich result types Google can read from a page, on mobile. Free.
- Google Search Console: Enhancements reports list errors and warnings across your whole site over time. Free.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: useful since Copilot relies on Bing. Free.
- Site crawlers such as Screaming Frog or Sitebulb: extract schema from every page so you can spot gaps and duplicates at scale. Paid tiers for bigger sites.
Tools for measuring visibility
- Search Console performance data: clicks and impressions for pages you changed.
- AI visibility trackers: run a fixed set of prompts across assistants and record whether and how your brand appears. See our overview of tracking AI search visibility.
- Analytics referrals: visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and similar sources in your analytics tool. Not all AI traffic is labelled, so treat it as a partial view.
A simple testing method
- Pick a group of pages with the same purpose, such as 20 product pages or 10 location pages.
- Record a baseline: schema errors, Search Console impressions, and AI prompt results for questions those pages should answer.
- Change one thing: for example, fix and complete the Product markup, but do not rewrite the text yet.
- Wait for recrawling: check in Search Console that the pages were recrawled.
- Measure again after four to eight weeks with the same prompts and metrics.
- Compare with a control group of similar pages you did not change, to separate your effect from general ups and downs.
Reading results honestly
AI answers vary from one run to the next. Run each prompt several times, or across several days, and look at the share of answers that mention you rather than one result. Expect small or mixed changes from schema alone. Bigger shifts usually come when better markup is combined with clearer content and new mentions elsewhere.
What to do with the findings
- If errors dropped but visibility did not move, focus next on content and outside mentions.
- If facts in AI answers became more accurate, keep markup maintenance in your routine.
- If nothing was recrawled, check crawler access and sitemaps first.

Keep a simple change log
One habit makes measurement much easier: write down every change you make and the date. A shared spreadsheet with columns for date, pages changed, what changed and who did it is enough. When visibility moves, up or down, you can look back and see what happened around that time, including things outside your control such as a site migration or a new competitor. Without a log, it is easy to give credit or blame to the wrong change.
