Structured data helps AI search tools understand the facts on your pages, such as who you are, what you sell and where you are. It is useful and low risk, but it is a support for good content, not a replacement for it. Below are short answers to the questions we hear most.
Does structured data help with AI search at all?
Yes, in a supporting way. AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity read web pages, often through search indexes. Structured data makes your key facts easier to read correctly. It does not by itself decide whether you are mentioned.
Is structured data the same as schema markup?
Mostly, yes. “Structured data” is the general idea of labelling information. “Schema markup” usually means using the schema.org vocabulary to do it, typically as JSON-LD code in your page.
Which types should I add first?
Organization on your homepage, LocalBusiness if you have premises, Product if you sell online, and Article on your guides. Add others only when they match what is actually on the page. Our industry examples show priorities by sector.
Do ChatGPT and Perplexity read schema?
The companies do not publish detailed rules on how their assistants use markup. What we know is that they read web pages and rely on search results, and search engines do use schema. So it is sensible to have accurate markup, but clear visible text matters at least as much.
How long until I see an effect?
Search engines can pick up markup changes within days to weeks once they recrawl the page. Whether AI answers change depends on many other factors, so there is no reliable timeline. Treat it as one improvement among several, and track results over months.
How much does it cost?
Basic markup is often free through your CMS or an SEO plugin. A developer may charge for custom setups or large catalogues. The bigger cost is usually keeping facts up to date, which is ongoing staff time.
Can structured data hurt me?
Incorrect or misleading markup can. Marking up fake reviews, hidden content or wrong prices goes against Google’s guidelines and can lead to rich results being removed. Accurate markup that matches the page is safe.
Do I need a developer?
Not for the basics on WordPress, Shopify, Wix or Squarespace. You may need one for custom sites, headless setups or if two plugins create conflicting markup.
What is more important than structured data?
- Pages that answer real buyer questions clearly.
- Consistent facts across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Reviews and mentions on trusted sites in your field.
- Making sure search and AI crawlers can access your site.
How do I check my markup?
Use the Schema.org validator and Google’s Rich Results Test, then watch the Enhancements reports in Google Search Console. For a fuller review, see our schema audit checklist.
Should every page have structured data?
No. Add it where there is something clear to describe: your organization, locations, products, articles and genuine FAQs. Pages like a privacy policy or a thank-you page do not need special markup. Adding schema types that do not match the page, just to have more of it, adds risk without benefit.
