Are Content Distribution Networks Worth It for AI Visibility?
Some services sell access to a ‘distribution network’ for AI search. Here is how to tell a useful network from a risky one, and what works better.

A content distribution network is worth it only if it puts your content on sites that real people read and trust in your industry. Many “networks” sold for SEO or AI visibility are groups of low-quality sites that exist to host paid articles. Those can waste your money and, in the worst cases, harm your search visibility. Judge any network by the quality of each individual site, not by its size.
Two very different things share the name
Legitimate syndication means respected publishers republish or license content, such as a trade association newsletter sharing your guide, or a press release service that reaches real journalists. Link networks are collections of sites, often owned by one operator, that publish anything for a fee. The first can help. The second is what search engines call a link scheme.
Why low-quality networks do not help with AI
AI assistants that search the web, and the search engines behind them, try to favour reliable sources. A site full of unrelated paid posts about casinos, diet pills and roofing is not a reliable source. Google has spam policies against link schemes and scaled low-value content. Even if your article gets indexed, it is unlikely to be the source an assistant chooses to cite.
How to evaluate a network
- Ask for the list of sites. A real network will share them. Visit each one.
- Check the topic fit. Do the sites cover your industry, or everything?
- Look for real readers. Are there comments, newsletters, social followers, named authors?
- Check editorial standards. Does the site ever reject content? If anything goes, it is not trusted.
- Read the disclosures. Paid placements should be labelled as sponsored, and links in them should use sponsored or nofollow attributes.
Warning signs
- “Publish on 500 sites in 48 hours.”
- Promises of ChatGPT or Gemini placement.
- Sites with no about page, no authors and no contact details.
- The same article posted word for word across dozens of domains.
What works better
Build your own small “network” of genuine relationships: suppliers who can feature you on their partner pages, local business associations, industry blogs that accept expert articles, podcasts in your niche, and reputable directories. Each placement takes more effort, but each one is a real signal. For a restaurant, that might be a local food blog review and a city guide listing. For a SaaS company, a comparison on G2 and an interview on an industry podcast.

If you have already used a low-quality network
Do not panic, but do clean up. Ask the provider to remove articles from sites that are clearly irrelevant or spammy. Where links in paid posts are not marked as sponsored or nofollow, ask for that to be fixed. Stop any ongoing paid placements that fail the checks above. Then shift your budget to a few placements you would be proud to show a customer. Going forward, the simple test is this: would this site be worth appearing on even if search engines and AI did not exist?
