Gemini vs Claude: What Differs When Optimizing for Each
Gemini and Claude are built by different companies and reach information in different ways. Here is what that means for your content plan.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Gemini is made by Google and is closely tied to Google Search. Claude is made by Anthropic and is used as a standalone assistant and inside many business tools, with web search available in some setups. The core work is the same for both: clear, accurate content and independent mentions. The difference is mostly in where each one looks first.
Side-by-Side Overview
Gemini
- Built by Google, integrated with Google Search, AI Overviews and Google’s workplace apps.
- Can draw on Google’s index, so your Google presence matters a lot.
- Strong link to Google Business Profile for local questions.
Claude
- Built by Anthropic, available through its own apps and an API that other companies build on.
- Answers from its training knowledge and, when web search is enabled, from live web results.
- Often used for research, writing and analysis tasks, including vendor comparisons at work.
What Helps With Both
- Plain, factual pages that answer buyer questions directly.
- Consistent business information on your website and across the web.
- Independent mentions in trade media, review sites and directories.
- Crawlable content that both search engines and AI crawlers can access.
- Up-to-date facts, since both can be used with live web results.
What Matters More for Gemini
Because Gemini leans on Google, traditional Google SEO hygiene has extra weight: indexing in Search Console, a complete Google Business Profile, Google reviews and structured data that Google supports. The robots.txt token Google-Extended is Google-specific and worth a deliberate decision. See ranking in Gemini AI search results for more.

What Matters More for Claude
Claude’s knowledge depends more on what is widely and clearly written about you across the public web than on any single platform. Anthropic’s crawler has its own user-agent, so check that your robots.txt does not block it by accident if you want your public pages to be accessible. When Claude uses web search, clear pages that answer questions are what it can use. Learn more in how Claude chooses brands to recommend.
A Simple Test You Can Run
- Choose five buyer questions for your business, for example “best bookkeeping service for Airbnb hosts in Nice”.
- Ask the same questions in Gemini and in Claude.
- Compare: are you mentioned in one but not the other? Do they cite different sources? Do they describe you differently?
Differences usually point to a gap. If Gemini knows you but Claude does not, you may be strong on Google properties but thin elsewhere on the web. If it is the other way around, your Google Business Profile or indexing may need work.
Keep Facts Aligned for Both
Both assistants can repeat outdated information if it is still published somewhere. An old press release with a former address, or a directory listing with last year’s prices, can end up in either answer. Keep one internal fact sheet and update every public source from it, so Gemini and Claude meet the same facts wherever they look.
Do Not Split Your Content
There is no need for separate “Gemini pages” and “Claude pages”. One set of strong pages serves both. Spend the extra effort on the distribution side: Google-specific listings for Gemini, and broad, independent coverage that any assistant can learn from.
