Claude does not have a results page with positions one to ten. It writes an answer, sometimes naming a few businesses and linking to sources. “Ranking” in Claude really means being included and described well. Most brands that are missing are not being punished; they are making avoidable mistakes that make them hard to find or hard to trust.

Mistake 1: Chasing a “position” that does not exist

Teams often ask, “What number are we in Claude?” The order of names in an answer can change with wording, follow-up questions and whether web search is used. A better goal is inclusion rate: out of 20 relevant prompts, how many mention you, and how accurately? Track that instead.

Mistake 2: Blocking crawlers by accident

Some sites block AI and search bots in robots.txt or behind a firewall rule set up years ago. If live search cannot read your pages, it cannot use them. Review your robots.txt and security settings with your developer. The AI crawler user-agent list helps you see which bots you are allowing or blocking.

Mistake 3: Vague homepage copy

“Innovative solutions for tomorrow” tells an AI system nothing. Compare it with “Payroll software for restaurants with 5 to 50 staff in Belgium”. The second line can be matched to a real question. Rewrite your homepage and key service pages so the first sentence states who you serve and what you do.

Mistake 4: Conflicting facts across the web

An old directory lists your former address. Your LinkedIn says you have 20 staff while your site says 50. A reseller still shows last year’s prices. Each conflict lowers confidence. Make a list of every place your business is described and bring them in line.

Mistake 5: No independent mentions

If the only source describing you is your own website, you look less established than competitors with reviews, press coverage and partner pages. Work on honest outside mentions: industry awards you actually win, guest articles, podcast interviews, supplier and partner listings, and genuine customer reviews.

Mistake 6: Ignoring comparison questions

Buyers ask things like “Brand A vs Brand B for small teams” or “alternatives to Brand C”. If you never explain how you compare, Claude has to rely on what others say. A fair, factual comparison page gives it something accurate to work with. Be honest about where a competitor is a better fit; balanced pages are more useful and more credible.

Mistake 7: Testing once and giving up

One check tells you little. Answers vary between sessions and change after model updates. Test a fixed set of prompts regularly and look at the trend over several weeks. Our guide on measuring AI visibility and brand mentions explains a simple method.

A quick self-audit

  1. Can a stranger understand what you do from your first homepage sentence?
  2. Do your robots.txt and firewall allow the crawlers you care about?
  3. Are your name, address, prices and services the same everywhere?
  4. Do at least three independent sites describe you accurately?
  5. Do you have pages for comparison and “best for” questions?
  6. Do you track a fixed prompt list over time?

Every “no” is a clear next task.
