Podcast show notes help AI visibility when they turn an audio episode into clear, readable text: a specific title, a summary of the main answers, guest details, timestamps and ideally a full transcript on your own website. AI assistants mostly understand podcasts through this text. Good show notes improve the chances an episode is found and referenced; they do not guarantee it.
Why Audio Needs Text
When someone asks “which podcast episodes explain how to price freelance design work?”, an assistant needs written evidence about what each episode covers. Some platforms create their own transcripts, but you cannot rely on them being complete or public. The text you publish yourself, on podcast directories and your own site, is the part you control.
Write Episode Titles That Say What’s Inside
“Episode 47 with Marta” tells nobody anything. “How to Price Freelance Design Work, With Marta Ruiz” names the topic and the guest. Lead with the question or outcome, then the guest name. Keep episode numbers at the end if you use them.
A Show Notes Template
- Two-sentence summary: the main question and the key answer from the episode.
- Key takeaways: three to five bullet points with concrete advice, numbers or examples from the conversation.
- Guest bio: full name, role, company and a link to their site or profile.
- Timestamps: labelled sections, such as “12:30 Setting a day rate”.
- Resources mentioned: books, tools and articles, with links.
- About the show: one line on who hosts it and who it is for.
Write each episode’s notes from scratch. Copying the same intro paragraph across every episode makes pages look alike and hides what is unique.
Publish Full Transcripts on Your Site
A transcript is the most complete record of what was said. Publish it on an episode page on your own website, under the show notes. Clean it up: correct names, numbers and technical terms, and add speaker labels and headings at topic changes. Long transcripts are easier to scan with headings, and those headings help AI tools find the part that answers a specific question. Our guide to structured content for AI search explains the formatting.
Use Structured Data
Schema.org has PodcastSeries and PodcastEpisode types. Adding them to episode pages, consistent with the visible content, helps systems understand that the page is an episode, which show it belongs to and when it was published.
Turn Episodes Into More Content
Your best episodes contain expert answers that deserve their own pages. Turn a strong segment into a written article, a definition, or an FAQ entry, and link back to the episode. This gives assistants a focused page for a specific question, while the episode remains the deeper source. For video versions, see YouTube descriptions for AI video search.
Help Guests Link Back
Send every guest the episode link and a short description they can share. When guests mention the episode on their own sites, newsletters and profiles, it creates natural, independent references connecting your show to the topic and the guest’s expertise.
Keep It Consistent
- Use the same show name and description on every podcast platform and your website.
- Keep guest names and titles accurate, and update them if they ask.
- Make sure episode pages are not blocked to crawlers and load quickly.
