🔵 For businesses that want more customers from AI search
Should You Optimize Differently for Each AI Assistant?
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot work in different ways. Here is what is shared, what differs, and when separate effort per platform makes sense.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Most of the work to appear in AI answers is the same for every assistant: clear facts, useful content, consistent details across the web and genuine third-party mentions. A few differences do matter, mainly which search engine an assistant uses, whether it shows source links, and which ecosystem its users live in. Build one strong base, then add small platform-specific steps.
What every assistant shares
All major assistants learn from large amounts of public text and many can fetch live web results. So the same foundations help everywhere:
- A website that states who you are, what you offer and where, in plain words
- Pages that answer real questions directly
- The same business details on your site, profiles and directories
- Reviews and mentions on trusted, relevant sites
- Pages that crawlers can access and read
If these are weak, platform-specific tactics will not help much.
Where the platforms differ
ChatGPT
ChatGPT can browse the web and show sources when it does. It is widely used for open questions and shortlists. Broad, well-structured content and a clear presence on the web help. More detail: how ChatGPT recommends businesses.
Google Gemini and AI Overviews
Gemini is part of Google’s ecosystem, and AI Overviews appear inside Google Search. Your Google Business Profile, your standing in Google Search and your presence on sites Google trusts all play a part.
Microsoft Copilot
Copilot uses Bing. Many businesses ignore Bing, so check that your site is indexed there, consider Bing Webmaster Tools, and keep your Bing Places listing current if you serve local customers.
Perplexity
Perplexity searches the web for most answers and shows numbered source links. Clear, current, well-sourced pages are a good fit, and citations here send visible clicks. See how Perplexity sources information.
Claude
Claude is often used for research, writing and work tasks. Its answers rely on training and, where enabled, web search. Thorough, factual and neutral content is a good match.
When separate effort makes sense
- Your buyers favour one tool. Office workers on Microsoft 365 may use Copilot daily. Android users may lean on Gemini.
- Tracking shows a gap on one platform only. If you appear in ChatGPT but never in Copilot, check your Bing indexing first.
- A platform shows wrong facts about you. Find the sources it cites and correct them.
Do you need a page per platform?
Usually not. Writing “our ChatGPT page” and “our Gemini page” with the same content splits your effort. One excellent page per buyer question serves all assistants. Platform-specific work is mostly technical and listing work: search engine indexing, business profiles, and checking that crawlers are not blocked.
Example: a hotel in Lisbon
A small hotel checks “quiet boutique hotel in Lisbon near the river” across assistants. It appears in Perplexity and ChatGPT, which cite travel guides that mention it, but not in Copilot. A quick check shows the hotel’s site was never verified in Bing and its Bing Places listing is missing. Fixing that is platform-specific work. The content and reviews behind the other mentions stay the same.
A simple order of work
- Fix the shared foundations.
- Track the same prompts across all major assistants.
- Investigate the platform where you are weakest.
- Apply the specific fix for that platform’s ecosystem.
- Re-check monthly.
