AI Search Optimization for Beginners: Where to Start
New to AI search? This beginner explainer covers what it is, how it differs from SEO and the first five things a small business should do.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Optimizing for AI search means making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend when people ask questions. It builds on normal SEO but adds new priorities: clear facts about your company, mentions on other trusted sites, and content that directly answers the questions customers ask tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
What “AI Search” Means
People now ask full questions to AI assistants instead of typing a few keywords. Someone who once searched “gym Leeds” may now ask, “Which gyms in Leeds have a pool and classes for beginners?” The assistant writes an answer and may name a few businesses. There is no page two. Either you are part of the answer or you are not.
Where AI Assistants Get Their Answers
There are two main sources:
- What the model learned: language models are trained on large amounts of public text up to a cut-off date.
- Live web results: many assistants search the web while answering. Copilot uses Bing, Google’s AI features use Google Search, and Perplexity shows links to its sources.
Nobody can pay to be placed in these answers. Visibility comes from the public web.
How It Differs from Classic SEO
Classic SEO aims for a high position in a list of links. AI search aims to be mentioned or cited inside an answer. Rankings still help, because AI tools often draw on top search results, but other factors grow in weight: how consistently your business is described across the web, how often trusted sites mention you, and how directly your pages answer real questions. The guide AI search vs traditional SEO goes into the details.
Your First Five Steps
- Ask the assistants about yourself. Try “What is [your business]?” and “Best [your service] in [your city]” in a few AI tools. Write down what they say.
- Fix your basic facts. Make sure your name, address, services and prices match on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and main directories.
- Check that your site can be crawled. Your important pages should load without logins and should not be blocked in
robots.txt. - Write one page per main question. If customers often ask “Do you deliver on Sundays?”, answer it clearly on your site.
- Earn a few real mentions. Local press, industry associations, supplier pages and honest customer reviews all help.
Words You Will Hear
- GEO (generative engine optimization): another name for optimizing content for AI-generated answers.
- AEO (answer engine optimization): similar idea, focused on direct answers.
- Citation: a link an assistant shows as a source.
- Entity: a clearly identified thing, like your company, that search engines can recognize.
What Not to Expect
Results are not instant and never guaranteed. AI answers change between users and over time. Treat it like building a reputation: steady work over months. Small, regular improvements, such as fixing one listing or answering one new question each week, add up faster than one big push followed by silence. When you are ready for more, the AI search optimization checklist lists the next steps.
