Microsoft Copilot Source Ranking: Improving Your Bing Foundations
Copilot often cites pages that Bing has found and understood. This step-by-step technical guide covers Bing indexing, IndexNow, markup and content signals.

Microsoft Copilot often grounds its answers in Bing search results and links to the pages it used. Microsoft does not publish exactly how Copilot picks or orders sources, but a page that Bing has not indexed or does not understand is unlikely to be chosen. Strong Bing foundations, plus clear and specific content, give your pages a better chance.
Step 1: Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools is free. Verify your domain, then check the index coverage reports to see which pages Bing has indexed and which have problems. If you already use Google Search Console, Bing lets you import sites from it, which saves time.
Step 2: Submit and maintain your sitemap
Submit your XML sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools. Make sure it only lists live, canonical pages. Remove redirected or deleted URLs. Check back after a few days for errors.
Step 3: Use IndexNow for faster updates
IndexNow is a protocol supported by Bing that lets you notify search engines when pages are added, updated or deleted. Many content management systems and plugins support it. It helps Bing pick up changes such as new prices or a new service page more quickly. It does not guarantee ranking, but it reduces delay.
Step 4: Check crawler access
- Make sure robots.txt does not block
Bingbot. - Check that firewall or bot protection is not challenging Bing’s crawler.
- Confirm main text is in the HTML source, not only rendered by JavaScript.
The AI crawler user-agent list helps you review which bots you allow.
Step 5: Add accurate structured data
Bing reads schema.org markup. Use Organization or LocalBusiness for company facts, Product for products and FAQPage where you have genuine FAQs. Keep the markup consistent with what is visible on the page.
Step 6: Improve page-level signals
Once Bing can read your pages, the content itself matters:
- Write a unique, descriptive title and meta description for each page.
- Open with a direct answer to the question the page targets.
- Include specific facts such as locations served, prices, standards and timeframes.
- Use headings that match how people ask questions.
- Link related pages together so Bing understands your topic coverage.
Step 7: Strengthen off-site signals
Claim and complete your Bing Places for Business listing if you serve local customers. Keep your LinkedIn company page accurate, since many B2B buyers look there. Earn genuine mentions from industry associations, partners and press. See LinkedIn profile optimization for AI for B2B tips.
Step 8: Check Copilot directly
Ask Copilot the questions your buyers ask. Note which sources are linked. Compare those pages with yours: do they answer more directly, include more detail or come from more recognised sites? Repeat monthly, because answers and sources change.
