Local Business AI Search Optimization: Technical Setup Checklist
Before content and reviews can help, AI tools must be able to read and trust your local data. Work through this technical checklist.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Local AI search optimization starts with technical basics: AI crawlers must be able to read your website, your business details must be in clean HTML and structured data, and your listings must match your site exactly. Once these are in place, reviews and content have something solid to build on.
1. Let the Right Crawlers In
Open your robots.txt file (yoursite.com/robots.txt) and check it does not block search engines or the AI crawlers you want to read your site. Some website builders, security plugins or hosting settings block bots by default. If you are unsure, ask your web developer to confirm which crawlers are allowed.
2. Put Key Facts in Plain Text
Many small business sites show opening hours in an image, the menu as a PDF or prices inside a booking widget. AI tools may not read these well. Make sure these facts also appear as normal text on the page:
- Business name, full address and phone number.
- Opening hours, including seasonal changes.
- Services and, if possible, starting prices.
- Areas served and languages spoken.
3. Add LocalBusiness Structured Data
Structured data tells machines exactly what each fact means. Add LocalBusiness markup (or a more specific type such as Dentist, Restaurant or Plumber) with your name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates and links to your official profiles. Test it with a structured data testing tool and keep it identical to the visible text. See schema markup for AI for more detail.
4. Make Name, Address and Phone Identical Everywhere
Choose one format and use it on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook and directories. “12 Rue de la Paix” and “12 r. de la Paix” may look the same to you, but consistency removes doubt for machines. Use the same business name everywhere too, without extra keywords added.
5. One Page per Location
If you have more than one location, give each its own page with its own address, hours, staff, photos and directions. Do not list five branches on a single contact page. Link each location page from your main menu or footer.
6. Claim and Complete Map Listings
- Google Business Profile, since Google’s AI features draw on Google Search.
- Bing Places, since Microsoft Copilot uses Bing.
- Apple Business Connect for Apple Maps users.
Fill in categories, services, attributes (such as wheelchair access) and a description that uses the same words as your website.
7. Make Pages Fast and Mobile Friendly
Slow, broken or hard-to-read pages are less likely to be crawled fully. Compress images, remove unused plugins and check that your site works on a phone.
8. Keep Hours and Holidays Updated
Wrong hours are one of the most frustrating AI errors for customers. Update special holiday hours on your listings and website at the same time.
9. Test What AI Sees
After the fixes, ask a few assistants “What are the opening hours of [business] in [town]?” and “What services does [business] offer?”. If answers are wrong, trace the source. For the non-technical side, such as reviews and local press, read how AI chooses local businesses.
