How to Get Cited as a Source in Google AI Overviews
Google’s AI Overviews, which grew out of the experiment once called SGE, show links to sources. Here is how to make your page one of them.

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of some Google Search results. They grew out of Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) test and are powered by Gemini. To be cited as a source, your page needs to be indexed, rank reasonably for the query and contain a clear passage that directly supports part of the summary.
From SGE to AI Overviews
Google first tested generative summaries in Search Labs under the name SGE. It later rolled the feature out more widely as AI Overviews. Many guides still use the old term “SGE ranking”. The goal is the same: be one of the links shown next to the summary. Google has also introduced an AI Mode in Search for longer, conversational queries, which uses similar principles.
How Source Links Appear
An AI Overview typically shows a short answer with links to pages that support it. Those links usually come from pages Google already considers relevant for the query, though not always the top organic result. A page that ranks fifth but has the clearest answer to one part of the question can still be cited.
This means two things matter: being in the running at all (indexed, relevant, decent quality) and having a specific passage that supports a specific claim.
Write Passages That Can Be Cited
Think in terms of short, self-contained passages. Compare:
- Hard to cite: “There are lots of things to think about when you choose, and it really depends on your situation.”
- Easy to cite: “A standard home EV charger in France usually needs a 7 kW single-phase connection. Installation must be done by a certified electrician.”
Make each key passage answer one sub-question. Put it right under a heading that states the question.
Cover the Follow-Up Questions
AI Overviews often answer several connected points: what it is, how much it costs, how long it takes, what to watch out for. Pages that cover a topic’s natural follow-ups give Google more reasons to cite them. Look at the “People also ask” box for your query and answer those questions on your page.
Practical Steps for One Target Query
- Search the query and note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it cites.
- Read the cited pages. What do they say that yours does not?
- Add a direct answer to the top of your page, then sections for each sub-question.
- Add facts only you can provide: your own process, prices, local details, photos with descriptive captions.
- Check the page is indexed and request re-indexing in Search Console after major edits.
- Re-check the query after a few weeks.
Know the Limits
AI Overviews do not appear for every search, and Google decides when to show them. Results vary by location, device and time. There is no setting or payment that puts you in. Google offers controls such as nosnippet that can limit how your content is shown, so check you have not applied these to pages you want cited.
Also be aware that being cited does not always mean a click. Some people get what they need from the summary. That is why the summary itself should describe you accurately, and why brand mentions matter as much as links.
