How LLMs Choose Which Brands to Mention
Why does an AI assistant name one brand and not another? This page explains the main factors behind brand selection in AI answers, in plain language.

LLMs choose which brands to mention based on what they learned in training and, for assistants that search, what they find on the web at the time of the question. Brands that are clearly relevant to the question, described consistently and mentioned by several independent, trusted sources are more likely to appear. There is no paid placement inside the answer itself.
Two sources of knowledge
An AI assistant draws on two kinds of knowledge:
- Training data. Text the model learned from before release. If a brand was widely discussed in that text, the model “knows” it, even without searching.
- Live retrieval. Many assistants search the web while answering. ChatGPT can browse, Perplexity shows source links, Copilot uses Bing, and Google’s AI Overviews draw on Google Search. Here, current pages and their search visibility matter.
A well-known brand may be named from training alone. A newer or smaller brand usually depends more on live retrieval.
Factor 1: Relevance to the exact question
The question shapes the answer. “Best CRM” tends to bring up the largest names. “Best CRM for a 10-person recruitment agency in Ireland” opens the door to specialists whose content clearly addresses that situation. Brands that publish pages matching specific use cases, sizes, industries and places give the model more reasons to pick them.
Factor 2: Agreement across sources
When several independent sources say similar things about a brand, an assistant can mention it with more confidence. If one review site praises you but nothing else mentions you, you are easier to leave out. Comparison articles, directories, review platforms, trade press and community discussions all add to this picture.
Factor 3: Clarity and consistency of facts
Assistants avoid statements they cannot support. If your pricing, features or location differ across sites, the model may skip you or describe you vaguely. Consistent facts make your brand easier to describe accurately.
Factor 4: Reputation signals
Reviews, ratings, awards from recognised bodies and expert coverage help assistants judge whether a brand is a sensible recommendation. Negative patterns in reviews can show up in answers too, often as caveats. For example, an assistant might recommend a hotel but add that guests often mention noise. Addressing recurring complaints in practice, not just in marketing, is the only lasting fix.
Factor 5: Accessibility
For live retrieval, the assistant must be able to reach and read your pages. Blocked crawlers, pages that need JavaScript to show text, or slow servers can mean your content is never considered.
What does not decide it
- Advertising budgets. You cannot buy a place inside an AI answer.
- Keyword stuffing. Repeating phrases does not make content more relevant to a model.
- A single viral post. One spike rarely outweighs years of consistent presence.
Why answers vary
Ask the same question twice and you may see different brands. Models generate text with some variation, and live search results change. That is why it helps to track many prompts over time rather than judge from one screenshot.
