Get Recommended by AI Tools: A 20-Point Checklist
A practical checklist to work through, covering facts, content, technical access, outside mentions and tracking, to improve your chances with AI assistants.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Getting recommended by AI tools comes down to being easy to find, easy to understand and well referenced. This checklist covers the 20 most practical items, grouped into five areas. Tick them off in order; the early items are quick and often fix the biggest problems.
A. Your core facts
- One-sentence description. What you do, for whom, and where, written the same way everywhere.
- Consistent name. Same business name on your site, social profiles and directories.
- Correct contact details. Address, phone, email and hours checked on every profile.
- Clear prices or ranges. Published in text, even if approximate.
B. Your website content
- One page per main service or product, starting with a two-sentence direct answer.
- FAQ section with the questions customers really ask your team.
- About page with founders, history, team expertise and location.
- Fair comparison page if buyers often compare you with alternatives.
- Proof: real testimonials (with permission), certifications you hold, examples of work.
C. Technical access
- Robots.txt does not block search engines or AI crawlers you want to allow. See our AI crawler user-agent list.
- Key text is in the HTML, not only in images, PDFs or scripts.
- Indexed in Google and Bing. Check with their webmaster tools; several assistants rely on these indexes.
- Structured data for your organization, services or products, matching visible content.
D. Outside mentions
- Main directories claimed for your sector and country.
- Review routine asking every real customer for honest feedback.
- Replies to reviews, including negative ones, calmly and factually.
- One earned mention per month: a guest article, interview, podcast or local press feature.
- No shortcuts: no fake reviews, paid links or disguised forum posts.

Is AI recommending your competitors instead of you?
See if ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity mention your business, who they name instead, and what to fix first. Takes about 30 seconds.

E. Tracking
- Prompt list: 15 to 30 real buyer questions, mostly without your brand name.
- Monthly check across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot, logging mentions, descriptions and competitors.
How to use this checklist
Score yourself: one point per completed item. Below 10, focus on sections A and C first, because wrong facts and blocked access undermine everything else. Between 10 and 15, put effort into content and outside mentions. Above 15, your job is mainly consistency and steady improvement.
Remember that no checklist guarantees a recommendation. AI assistants decide their answers on their own. These items improve your chances and make the answers about you more accurate. For the reasoning behind the list, read how LLMs decide which companies to mention.
A note on timing
Sections A and C can often be finished in a week or two. Sections B and D are ongoing. Plan to revisit the whole checklist every quarter, because facts change, new directories appear and assistants change how they search. Keeping a simple log of what you changed and when makes it much easier to connect improvements with results.
Common traps
Do not try to complete every item at once with rushed, thin pages. One excellent service page beats five generic ones. Also, do not measure success only with prompts that contain your brand name, since those almost always mention you anyway.
