How AI Assistants Decide Which Products to Recommend
When a shopper asks AI for the best product, how does it choose? Here is what influences product recommendations and how to shape your product pages.

AI assistants recommend products by matching the shopper’s stated needs to products that several trusted sources describe well: reviews, buying guides, retailer listings and the brand’s own pages. They favour products whose features, price and audience are clearly stated and confirmed in more than one place. There is no fixed formula, but clear, consistent and well-reviewed products tend to come up more.
Step 1: The assistant reads the shopper’s need
Shoppers rarely ask “best blender”. They ask “quiet blender for smoothies in a small flat, under €100” or “gift for a 10-year-old who likes science”. The assistant breaks this into needs: noise, use, size, budget, age, interest. Products that are described in those same terms are easier to match.
What to do: on each product page, state who it is for and the situations it suits, using plain words. “Runs at a low noise level, suits small kitchens” is more useful to an AI than “whisper-smooth performance”.
Step 2: It looks for products with clear facts
When an assistant searches the web, it pulls product pages, retailer listings and review articles. If your page lists dimensions, materials, price, compatibility and care instructions as text, the assistant can use them. If those facts are in images or missing, another product with clearer data may be chosen instead.
What to do: add a short specifications list to each product page. Include the details shoppers compare most in your category.
Step 3: It checks what others say
Assistants tend to give more weight to products that independent sources mention: review roundups, comparison sites, specialist blogs and customer reviews on retailer sites. A product mentioned only by its maker is a weaker candidate.
What to do: ask real customers for reviews, send samples to relevant independent reviewers without conditions on what they write, and make sure your products are listed accurately wherever they are sold. Our page on customer reviews and AI explains more.
Step 4: It filters by price and availability
If the shopper gives a budget or location, the assistant tries to respect it. Products with outdated prices, unclear currency or unknown shipping regions can be dropped or described wrongly.
What to do: keep prices and stock visible as text and in your structured data. State where you ship.
Step 5: It explains the pick
Good assistants give a reason: “good for small spaces”, “strong battery life according to reviews”. These reasons usually come from repeated themes across sources. If your product’s main strength is said in the same way on your site and in reviews, it is more likely to be used as the reason.
A product page checklist
- One-sentence summary of what it is and who it is for.
- Specs as a text list, with units.
- Price, currency and availability in plain text.
- Use cases and situations it suits.
- Genuine reviews shown on the page.
- Product schema markup that matches visible content.
