Questions asked to AI assistants are longer and more detailed than classic search keywords, so they reveal intent more clearly. A person asking “what should I look for in a family car seat?” is learning, while “which is safer, Brand A or Brand B, for a newborn?” is close to buying. Sorting your target questions by intent helps you create the right content for each stage.

Why AI questions show intent so clearly

People talk to assistants as they would to a knowledgeable friend. They add context: their budget, location, team size, constraints. “Best CRM” becomes “CRM for a 10-person agency that already uses Google Workspace, under €50 a month”. Each extra detail tells you who is asking and how close they are to deciding.

Four common intent stages

1. Learning

Signals: “what is”, “how does”, “why do I need”. Example: “what is a heat pump and does it work in cold winters?”. The buyer is not ready to choose a provider. Good content: clear explainers and guides that build trust.

2. Exploring options

Signals: “best”, “options for”, “alternatives to”, “top”. Example: “best heat pump installers in Strasbourg”. The buyer wants a shortlist. Good content: service pages with location, specialisation and proof such as reviews and certifications.

3. Comparing

Signals: “vs”, “difference between”, “which is better”, “pros and cons”. Example: “air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump for an old stone house?”. Good content: honest comparisons, specs, pricing ranges and use cases.

4. Ready to act

Signals: “how much”, “near me”, “open now”, “book”, “price of”. Example: “how much does a heat pump installation cost in Alsace?”. Good content: clear pricing, contact details, opening hours, booking information.

How to collect real questions

  • Review sales calls, emails and chat logs for questions customers ask before buying.
  • Ask your team which questions come up most often.
  • Look at “People also ask” boxes and related searches in Google and Bing.
  • Ask an assistant to list common questions about your category, then check them against your real customer experience.

Map questions to pages

Build a simple table with four columns: question, intent stage, the page that answers it, and whether you appear in AI answers for it. Gaps in the “page” column are content to create. Gaps in the last column are where you need better pages, more outside mentions, or clearer facts.

Follow-up questions show intent too

AI conversations rarely stop at one question. A buyer may ask for a shortlist, then “which of those offer financing?”, then “which one has the best reviews for after-sales service?”. Each follow-up narrows the choice. Brands stay in the conversation when their pages answer these detail questions clearly: payment options, guarantees, response times, service areas. Think of your content as answering the second and third question, not only the first.

Where to focus first

For most businesses, the “exploring” and “ready to act” stages deliver customers soonest. A plumber gains more from appearing in “emergency plumber in Toulouse open Sunday” than in “how do pipes freeze”. Learning content still matters, because it builds authority, but start where intent is highest.

A caution about the data

AI companies do not publish the questions their users ask, so no one has a complete view of real prompt volume. Treat any tool’s “prompt volume” figures as estimates. Your own customer conversations are often the most reliable guide to what people ask. See also measuring AI visibility.
