How to Set Up Alerts for Brand Mentions in ChatGPT
ChatGPT has no built-in alert when it mentions your brand. Here is how to build a practical monitoring routine that tells you when answers about you change.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
ChatGPT does not send alerts when it mentions your brand, because answers are generated privately for each user. To get “alerts”, you run a fixed set of prompts on a schedule, compare the answers with previous results, and flag meaningful changes: your brand appearing or disappearing, a new competitor, a new cited source or a wrong fact. This can be done manually or with a monitoring tool.
Why Traditional Mention Alerts Don’t Work Here
Web mention tools find your brand on public pages, such as news articles or blog posts. ChatGPT conversations are not public pages, so those tools cannot see them. The only way to know what ChatGPT says is to ask it the same questions your customers ask, regularly.
Step 1: Decide What You Want to Be Alerted About
- Visibility changes: your brand starts or stops appearing for a key question.
- Accuracy issues: wrong prices, old products, wrong location, confusion with another company.
- Competitor changes: a new competitor appears in answers where you compete.
- Source changes: a new site is cited when ChatGPT searches for your category.
- Sentiment shifts: answers start mentioning complaints or caveats about you.
Step 2: Build Your Watch List
Write 20 to 40 prompts in three groups:
- Brand questions: “What is [brand]?”, “Is [brand] reliable?”, “[brand] pricing”.
- Category questions: “Best accounting app for freelancers in France”.
- Comparison questions: “[brand] vs [competitor]”.
Keep the wording fixed so results can be compared over time.
Step 3: Choose a Schedule
Weekly suits most brands; daily may make sense during a launch, a rebrand or a public issue. Because answers vary, run important prompts two or three times per check and record the pattern, not just one answer.
Step 4: Define Simple Alert Rules
Examples of rules worth setting up:
- Alert if the brand is missing from a category prompt where it appeared in most of the last four checks.
- Alert if any answer contains a price or product name that differs from your official list.
- Alert if a new competitor appears in more than half of the runs.
- Alert if a negative phrase, such as “complaints” or “lawsuit”, appears in brand answers.
In a spreadsheet, these can be simple formulas and colour highlights. In a monitoring tool, they are usually built-in notifications. See our overview of AI brand mention monitoring tools.
Step 5: Know What to Do When an Alert Fires
- Wrong fact: find the source with the wrong information and correct it; update your own pages.
- Dropped mention: check whether a competitor published new content or earned new coverage.
- Negative sentiment: look for the underlying source, respond honestly and fix real issues.
Cover Other Assistants Too
Customers also use Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot, and answers can differ. Use the same watch list across them. Our page on Perplexity brand monitoring covers that assistant specifically.
Keep a Change Log
Next to your alerts, keep a simple log of your own actions: new pages, press coverage, listing fixes. When an alert fires, check the log first. A drop or a rise in mentions is easier to understand when you can see what changed on your side and when.
