🔵 For businesses that want more customers from AI search
What Is AI SEO? A Plain-English Definition
AI SEO means making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend. Here is what it covers, in simple terms.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
AI SEO is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot to find, understand and mention. It builds on classic SEO, but the goal shifts from ranking a link on a results page to being included, accurately, in a written answer. Some people call it GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). The idea is the same.
Why a New Name Was Needed
For twenty years, “search” meant typing a few words into Google and choosing from ten blue links. Today many people type a full question into an AI assistant: “Which accounting software is easiest for a freelance designer?” The assistant reads, summarizes and answers in one go. Sometimes it names brands. Sometimes it shows a few source links. Often the user never visits a results page at all.
That changes what “being visible” means. A page in position four on Google still gets some clicks. A brand that is not named in the AI answer gets nothing from that conversation. AI SEO is the name for the work that improves your chances of being named.
Where AI Answers Come From
An AI assistant builds its answer from two places:
- Training data: the large body of public text the model learned from. This shapes what it “knows” about your category and your brand, but it is updated only when a new model version is trained.
- Live web results: many assistants can search the web while answering. ChatGPT can browse, Perplexity shows its source links, Copilot draws on Bing, and Google AI Overviews appear inside Google Search.
Nobody can pay to be placed in either one. Visibility is earned through useful content, mentions on trusted sites, consistent facts and pages that AI crawlers can actually read. For a deeper look at the mechanics, see how large language models discover and trust brands.
What AI SEO Involves in Practice
Day to day, AI SEO usually means five kinds of work:
- Knowing the questions. Listing the real prompts buyers type, such as “best CRM for a small law firm” or “is X worth it”.
- Checking the answers. Asking those prompts in several assistants and noting who gets mentioned, including competitors.
- Filling the gaps. Writing clear pages that directly answer those questions, with specific facts like prices, locations and use cases.
- Earning mentions elsewhere. Being listed and discussed on review sites, directories, industry publications and comparison articles that AI tools read.
- Keeping the technical door open. Making sure AI crawlers are not blocked and your key content is in plain HTML.
How It Differs From Classic SEO
Classic SEO and AI SEO share most of their foundations: helpful content, a crawlable site and a good reputation. The differences are in emphasis.
- Classic SEO targets keywords. AI SEO targets full questions and the entities (brands, products, places) inside them.
- Classic SEO measures rankings and clicks. AI SEO measures how often you are mentioned and whether the facts are right.
- Classic SEO focuses on your own site. AI SEO gives more weight to what other sites say about you, because assistants often combine several sources.
The page on AI search vs traditional SEO goes through these differences in more detail.
Who Needs AI SEO Now
Any business whose buyers research before they buy. That includes software companies, agencies, clinics, law firms, hotels, online shops and local trades. If a customer might ask an assistant “who should I hire” or “what should I buy”, your business is already being compared, whether you take part or not.
A simple test: ask three assistants the question your best customer would ask. If you are absent, or described wrongly, AI SEO is worth your time.
