AI SEO for SaaS: 8 Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Many SaaS teams make the same errors when trying to show up in AI answers. Here are eight common mistakes and what to do instead.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Most SaaS companies that struggle in AI answers are not doing too little. They are making a few avoidable mistakes: hiding key facts, writing vague copy, gating useful content and chasing shortcuts. Fixing these often does more than publishing lots of new content. Here are eight mistakes to check for.
Mistake 1: Pricing hidden behind “Contact us” or scripts
When a buyer asks “how much does [your tool] cost?”, the assistant needs something to quote. If your prices only load through JavaScript, sit in an image, or are missing, the AI may guess or use an old figure. Fix: show plans and prices in plain HTML text. If you use custom pricing, say what it depends on and give a starting point.
Mistake 2: Homepage copy that says nothing concrete
“The future of work, reimagined” does not tell an assistant what you do. Fix: put a one-sentence factual description near the top: “[Product] is invoicing software for freelance designers in Europe.” Keep it the same across your site and profiles.
Mistake 3: Docs and help centre behind a login
Help articles are some of the best sources for questions like “does [tool] support SSO?” or “can [tool] export to CSV?”. If they need a login, crawlers cannot read them. Fix: make product docs public unless there is a real security reason not to.
Mistake 4: Blocking AI crawlers by accident
Some teams copy a robots.txt template or turn on a security setting that blocks AI crawlers without realising it. Fix: review your robots.txt and firewall rules. Decide on purpose which bots can access which parts of your site. Our AI crawler user-agent list helps here.
Mistake 5: Only targeting “best [category] software”
That prompt is crowded and big brands usually win it. Fix: also target narrower prompts where you are a strong fit: “scheduling tool for dog groomers”, “CRM that works offline for field sales”. Write a page for each.
Mistake 6: Comparison pages that trash competitors
One-sided “we beat everyone” pages are easy to spot and less likely to be trusted or quoted. Fix: write fair comparisons. Say where a competitor is a better choice. It makes your strengths more believable.
Mistake 7: Buying reviews or seeding forums
It can be tempting to post fake recommendations on community sites or pay for reviews. This breaks platform rules, can get content removed and can damage trust in your brand if spotted. Fix: ask real customers for honest reviews at good moments, such as after a successful onboarding. Join communities as yourself and help openly.
Mistake 8: Never re-checking after a launch
SaaS changes quickly. A new plan, a rename or a removed feature can leave AI answers out of date for a long time. Fix: after each major change, update all public facts and re-check what assistants say a few weeks later.
A quick self-check
- Can a stranger understand what you sell from your homepage’s first two lines?
- Are your prices and plans readable as plain text?
- Are your docs public and crawlable?
- Do you have pages for your best-fit niches, not just your broad category?
- Are your reviews real and recent?
If you answered no to any of these, start there. For a full plan, see AI search optimization for SaaS companies.
