AI Search Ranking Factors: A Self-Check for Your Website
Score your own site against the signals AI assistants rely on when they pick brands to mention, and find the weakest spot to fix first.

AI assistants do not publish a ranking formula, but the signals that help a brand get mentioned are well understood: the assistant must be able to reach your pages, understand who you are, find other sources that agree, and pull a clean answer from your text. This page turns those signals into a simple self-check you can do in an afternoon.
How to use this self-check
Give each area below a score from 0 to 2. Zero means “not done”, one means “partly done”, two means “done and kept up to date”. You do not need a perfect total. The goal is to find the one or two areas holding you back, because a single weak area (for example, blocked crawlers) can cancel out good work elsewhere.
Area 1: Can AI systems reach your pages?
- Your robots.txt does not block the crawlers used by AI search features unless you have chosen to.
- Your key pages load as normal HTML text, not only inside scripts, images or PDFs.
- Important pages are linked from your menu or sitemap, not hidden behind forms.
Score 2 if all three are true. If you are unsure, our guide on preparing your website for AI search walks through each check.
Area 2: Is your identity clear?
An assistant has to connect your name to a category, a location and a set of offers. Check that your homepage says in one plain sentence what you do, for whom and where. Check that your company name, address and phone number are written the same way on your site, your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and the main directories in your field. Organization schema markup helps, but only if it matches the visible text.
Area 3: Do other sources agree with you?
AI answers lean on corroboration. If only your own website says you are a good choice for “accounting software for freelancers”, that claim is weak. Look for:
- Reviews on the platforms your buyers actually use.
- Mentions in trade publications, local news or comparison articles.
- Listings in respected directories and associations.
Score 2 if you can find at least a handful of independent pages that describe you accurately.
Area 4: Is your content easy to quote?
Open your most important service page and ask: could someone copy two sentences from it and answer a buyer’s question? Pages that start with a direct answer, use clear headings, and include specifics (prices or price ranges, service areas, delivery times, who the product is for) are much easier for an assistant to cite than pages full of slogans. A short FAQ section that answers real customer questions also helps.
Area 5: Is your information fresh?
Assistants that browse the web, such as ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Copilot, often prefer recent pages. Old prices, discontinued products and outdated team pages create conflicting facts. Score 2 if your main pages show recent update dates and nothing important is out of date.
Area 6: Do you answer the questions buyers ask?
List ten questions a customer might type into an AI assistant, such as “best bakery for wedding cakes in Bordeaux” or “invoicing tool that works with Stripe”. For each one, do you have a page that answers it directly? Missing pages are the most common gap we see, and the easiest to close.
Reading your score
Add up your points out of 12. Below 6, fix access and identity first, since they are the foundation. Between 6 and 9, focus on outside mentions and question-focused pages. Above 9, the next step is tracking: you need to see how assistants actually answer your target questions, because a good score does not prove you are being mentioned. The deeper background is in our article on AI search ranking factors you need to know.
How Keboost helps
A self-check shows what is in place. It does not show what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Copilot actually say about you. Keboost tracks the prompts your customers ask across these assistants, shows where you and your competitors appear, and creates focused content to fill the gaps. No one can guarantee a mention, but you can see where you stand and improve your chances. Run a free AI visibility check to compare your self-check with real answers.
