A Framework for AI Search Optimization: The Four-Layer Model
A simple four-layer framework (access, facts, content, evidence) for organising AI search optimization work and finding where your weak point is.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
A useful framework for AI search optimization has four layers: access (can AI systems read you?), facts (is your information clear and consistent?), content (do you answer the questions buyers ask?) and evidence (do independent sources back you up?). Each layer depends on the one below it. Working out which layer is weakest tells you where to start.
Layer 1: Access
If crawlers cannot reach or read your pages, the other layers barely matter for assistants that browse the web.
- Robots.txt allows the crawlers you want.
- Main content is in the HTML, not only loaded by scripts.
- Pages are indexed in Google and Bing.
- Pages load reliably and quickly.
Diagnostic: Perplexity or ChatGPT search never cite your site, even for questions only you can answer.
Layer 2: Facts
Assistants repeat information that appears consistently. This layer covers your core facts: name, what you do, who you serve, location, prices, contact details and key dates.
- One agreed fact sheet.
- Same facts on your site, profiles and listings.
- Structured data describing your organisation and products; see schema markup for AI.
Diagnostic: assistants describe you wrongly or vaguely when asked directly.
Layer 3: Content
Content connects your business with the questions buyers ask. It should match real prompts and give direct answers.
- A page for each main product or service.
- Guides for common problem questions.
- Honest comparison and “best for” pages.
- FAQ sections in customers’ words.
Diagnostic: assistants describe you correctly when asked by name, but never mention you for category questions.
Layer 4: Evidence
Independent sources tell assistants that others vouch for you. This includes reviews, press, trade publications, directories, awards, partnerships and expert mentions.
- Listings on the sources assistants cite in your industry.
- Genuine reviews on relevant platforms.
- Earned media and expert commentary.
Diagnostic: competitors with less useful content but more coverage appear ahead of you.
Using the Framework
- Run your priority prompts across several assistants.
- For each prompt where you are missing or wrong, use the diagnostics to tag the likely layer.
- Count the tags. The layer with the most is your priority.
- Fix from the bottom up: access before facts, facts before content, content before evidence.
- Re-test monthly and re-tag.
Example: An Online Wine Shop
A wine shop finds assistants call it a “wine bar” (facts problem), never cite its delivery page (access problem: blocked by robots.txt), and recommend rivals for “natural wine delivery in Berlin” (content and evidence problems). It fixes robots.txt first, then its descriptions, then writes a natural wine guide and approaches Berlin food blogs.
Who Owns Each Layer
Assigning owners keeps the framework practical. Access usually sits with whoever manages the website. Facts belong to the person who maintains listings and brand information. Content is a marketing task. Evidence is shared between PR, partnerships and customer success, who can ask happy clients for reviews. When one person owns everything, as in a small business, work through the layers in order across several weeks.
Limits of Any Framework
AI systems do not publish exact ranking rules, and they change over time. Treat this as a way to organise work, not a formula that guarantees inclusion. For common errors at each layer, see common AI search optimization mistakes.
How Keboost Helps
Keboost supports every layer: it tracks your prompts across major AI assistants, shows where you and competitors appear and which sources are cited, and helps create and distribute content for the content and evidence layers. Run a free AI visibility check to find your weakest layer.
