AI Recommends Your Competitors? How to Close the Gap
When AI assistants keep naming rivals instead of you, the answer is in the details. Here is how to work out why, and what to do about it honestly.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
If AI assistants recommend your competitors and not you, they are usually reflecting stronger signals on the web: clearer pages, more third-party mentions, better reviews or more consistent facts. You cannot remove competitors from AI answers, and no honest service will claim to. What you can do is study why they appear and build those same kinds of signals for your own business.
Step 1: confirm the pattern
A single answer proves little because AI responses vary. Run the same set of questions several times, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot. Note which competitors appear most, and for which questions. You may find that one rival dominates broad questions while you appear for some narrower ones.
Step 2: run a side-by-side audit
Pick the competitor that appears most often. Compare yourself on these points:
- Page match: do they have a page that answers the exact question? Do you?
- Specifics: do their pages state prices, locations, features or results more clearly?
- Third-party sources: in Perplexity or other assistants that show sources, which sites are cited? Are they listed there and you are not?
- Reviews: how many reviews do they have on the platforms that matter, and how detailed are they?
- Consistency: are their name and facts identical everywhere? Are yours?
- Freshness: have they published or been mentioned recently?
Most gaps become obvious after this exercise. Our page on competing with rivals in AI answers includes more audit ideas.
Step 3: pick your battles
You do not need to match a competitor everywhere. Focus on:
- Questions closest to a purchase.
- Questions where you have a real advantage, such as a specialty, location or price point.
- Questions where the competitor’s coverage is weak or outdated.
For example, a regional HR software firm may never beat a global brand for “best HR software”, but can compete for “HR software for Belgian companies with joint committee rules”.
Step 4: build the missing signals
- Create pages that answer your chosen questions more clearly and specifically than anyone else.
- Earn presence on the sources the assistants cite, through genuine listings, reviews and outreach.
- Publish fair comparisons that explain when you are the better fit, and when you are not.
- Fix any inconsistent or outdated facts about your business.
What to avoid
Do not post negative reviews about competitors, make misleading claims about them, or use fake accounts. These tactics are dishonest, can breach platform rules and consumer law, and damage your own reputation if discovered.
Track the share, not just the mention
Measure how often you appear compared with each competitor across your full prompt list, month by month. A rising share is a better sign of progress than any single answer. See how AI chooses between similar brands for the factors behind the numbers.
Example: two accounting firms
Two firms in Lyon offer similar services. One appears in AI answers for “accountant for restaurants in Lyon”; the other does not. The audit shows the first has a dedicated page on restaurant accounting, reviews from café owners mentioning VAT help, and a listing in a regional hospitality association directory. The second firm now knows exactly which three gaps to close.
