Most brands that are missing from AI answers are not being ignored on purpose. They are making small, fixable mistakes: blocking crawlers, hiding facts inside images, writing vague pages, or leaving old information online. Fixing these does not guarantee a mention, but it removes the barriers that make a mention unlikely.

1. Blocking AI crawlers by accident

Some security plugins, firewalls or copied robots.txt files block the bots that AI search features use to read web pages. The result: assistants that search the web cannot read your site at all. Fix: review your robots.txt and firewall rules, and decide on purpose which crawlers you allow. Our guide on preparing your website for AI search explains the checks.

2. Putting key facts in images or PDFs

A price list as a picture, a menu as a scanned PDF, or opening hours inside a banner graphic are hard for machines to read reliably. Fix: publish the same information as plain text on a normal web page.

3. Writing slogans instead of answers

“We deliver excellence and innovation” tells an assistant nothing. Compare it with “We install heat pumps for houses in Brittany, typically within three weeks of the survey.” Fix: start each key page with one or two factual sentences that answer the question a buyer would ask.

4. Letting old information pile up

An old blog post with 2021 prices, a closed branch still listed in a directory, or a former product name on a partner site creates conflicting signals. Assistants may repeat the wrong version. Fix: audit your site and main listings twice a year, update or redirect old pages, and ask partners to correct outdated details.

5. Only tracking your brand name

Checking “what is [brand]?” shows what the assistant knows about you, but new customers ask category questions like “best dog groomer in Annecy” or “simple HR software for a 20-person company”. Fix: track discovery and comparison questions, not just brand questions.

6. Faking social proof

Buying reviews, posting fake forum recommendations or creating made-up “best of” lists can backfire. Review platforms remove fake reviews, forums ban accounts, and readers lose trust when they notice. It also creates a record you do not want tied to your brand. Fix: ask real customers for reviews, contribute genuinely useful answers where you have expertise, and earn coverage with real news or data.

7. Ignoring the sources assistants trust in your industry

For restaurants, assistants often draw on review sites and local guides. For software, on comparison sites and tech publications. For trades, on directories and local listings. Fix: look at which sources are cited for your topics and make sure your profile on each one is complete and accurate. See how AI assistants choose sources.

8. Treating it as a one-time job

Answers change as the web and the models change. A brand that appeared in March may be replaced by a competitor in June. Fix: recheck your important questions monthly and keep publishing useful, updated content.

Which mistake to fix first

Start with the technical ones (1 and 2), because they can block everything else. Then fix your facts (4), then improve your pages (3) and your presence on trusted sources (7). Leave nothing in category 6 online.
