What AI Search Presence Means for a Small Business
AI search presence is more than being named once. It means being found, described correctly and cited when buyers ask assistants for help.

AI search presence is how often, and how well, your business shows up when people ask AI assistants questions about your market. It has three levels: being mentioned at all, being described correctly, and being cited as a source. A small business can build all three without a large budget, mainly by making its facts clear and easy to find.
Why it matters now
More people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Copilot for suggestions before they search, call or visit. A homeowner might ask “who can fix a leaking boiler in Montpellier this week?” or a shop owner might ask “which card reader is cheapest for a small café?”. If your business is absent from these answers, you are missing from a growing part of the buyer’s shortlist, even if your Google ranking is good.
The three levels of presence
Level 1: Mentioned
The assistant names your business in an answer. This is the first step and often the hardest for small or new companies, because the assistant needs to have seen your name in enough places to connect it with your category.
Level 2: Described correctly
Being named is not enough if the details are wrong. An assistant might say you close at 17:00 when you are open late, or list a service you stopped offering. Wrong descriptions send customers away or create frustration. Accuracy depends on consistent information across your site, your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, social profiles and directories.
Level 3: Cited
Some assistants show the pages they used. When your own website or a positive article about you is the cited source, people can click through. Perplexity shows citations for most answers, and Google AI Overviews and Copilot also link to sources. Being cited usually means your page answered the question clearly.
A quick way to check your presence
- Write five questions a new customer might ask, including your city or niche.
- Ask them in two or three different assistants.
- Note whether you are named, whether the details are right, and whether any of your pages are linked.
- Ask directly about your business (“what does [name] offer?”) to see what the assistant already knows.
Do not be discouraged by a poor first result. Most small businesses start at level zero for discovery questions.
First steps to build presence
- Write a clear “about” sentence. One line on your homepage: what you do, for whom, and where. For example: “Family-run bike repair shop in Toulouse, servicing road, city and electric bikes.”
- Fix your listings. Make your name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere. Our guide to directory listings for AI crawlers lists where to start.
- Collect genuine reviews. Ask happy customers to leave a review on the platform they already use. Never buy or write fake reviews.
- Answer real questions on your site. A page about “how much does a bike service cost in Toulouse?” is more useful to an assistant than a general services page.
- Get mentioned locally. Local news, business associations, event listings and partner websites all add outside confirmation.
How long does it take?
Assistants that search the live web can pick up new pages quickly once they are crawled. Information that relies on the model’s training data changes more slowly. It is honest to plan in months, not days, and nobody can promise a specific date. For a realistic view, see how long it takes to appear in AI tools.
