How to Build an AI Discoverability Strategy
A practical plan for making your business easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to find, understand and mention when customers ask.

An AI discoverability strategy is a written plan for how AI assistants will find, understand and mention your business. It starts with the questions your customers ask, then lines up your website, your third-party mentions and your facts so that an assistant has good reasons to include you. It is a plan, not a trick, and it improves your chances over months rather than overnight.
Why You Need a Strategy, Not Random Tactics
Many businesses react to AI search by publishing a few blog posts or adding schema and hoping for the best. That rarely works because AI assistants look at many signals at once. They read your site, but they also read directories, reviews, news and comparison articles. A strategy makes sure these signals tell the same story and point at the same questions.
Step 1: Choose the Prompts You Want to Be Found For
Write down 20 to 40 questions a buyer might type into an assistant. Mix three kinds:
- Category prompts: “best accounting software for freelancers in Germany”.
- Problem prompts: “how do I stop my invoices being paid late”.
- Comparison prompts: “Brand A vs Brand B for small teams”.
Rank them by how close they are to a purchase. A prompt that ends with “near me” or “for a 10-person team” usually signals a buyer, not a student.
Step 2: Define the Facts You Want Repeated
AI assistants repeat what they see consistently. Decide on a short fact sheet: what you do, who you serve, where you operate, price range, founding year and main differentiators. Then check that your website, social profiles, directory listings and press mentions say the same thing. Conflicting details make an assistant less confident about mentioning you.
Step 3: Map Where Answers Come From
For each priority prompt, ask the main assistants and note which brands and sources appear. Perplexity shows its source links, and ChatGPT shows sources when it browses the web, so you can see which review sites, lists and publications they lean on. Those sources become your outreach list. This is also where you spot how assistants decide which companies to mention in your category.
Step 4: Plan Content That Fills the Gaps
Look for questions where the answer is thin or where competitors appear and you do not. Plan pages that answer those questions directly:
- A clear service or product page for each main offer.
- Comparison or “who it is for” pages that explain honest trade-offs.
- Guides that answer problem prompts in plain language.
- An FAQ section with the exact wording customers use.
Then plan how each piece gets seen beyond your own site: guest articles, industry directories, podcast appearances or data you publish that others can cite.
Step 5: Remove Technical Barriers
If crawlers cannot read your pages, nothing else matters. Check that robots.txt does not block the AI and search crawlers you want, that key content is in HTML rather than hidden behind scripts, and that pages load quickly. Bing indexing matters too, because Copilot draws on Bing.
Step 6: Set a Review Rhythm
AI answers change as models update and new content appears. Re-run your prompt list every month, record whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which competitors appear. Adjust the plan each quarter based on what moved. For ideas on what to record, see how to measure AI visibility and brand mentions.
A Simple 90-Day Outline
- Weeks 1–2: prompt list, fact sheet, baseline answers.
- Weeks 3–6: fix inconsistent listings, technical checks, two or three core pages.
- Weeks 7–12: outreach to the sources assistants already cite, new guides, first progress review.
