Why Your Business Is Missing From AI Answers: A Diagnostic Guide
If AI assistants never mention you, there is usually a reason you can find. Work through these six likely causes, one by one.

When a business is missing from AI answers, the cause is usually one of six things: the assistant cannot read your site, does not know who you are, cannot tell what you offer, finds conflicting facts, sees no one else vouching for you, or the question is dominated by bigger names. Each cause has a simple test and a fix. Work through them in order.
Cause 1: Crawlers Cannot Read Your Site
Test: check robots.txt for rules blocking AI crawlers. Fetch a key page’s raw HTML and see whether the main text is there. Search site:yourdomain.com in Google and Bing.
Fix: allow the crawlers you want, render key text server-side, fix indexing errors, and submit sitemaps to both Google and Bing.
Cause 2: The Assistant Does Not Know Who You Are
Test: ask “What is [your business name]?” in several assistants. Do they say they do not know, or describe another company with a similar name?
Fix: publish a clear About page and fact sheet. Use one consistent name and description everywhere. Add Organization schema with links to your official profiles. If your name is common, add a distinguishing detail such as “[Name] Bakery, Rennes”.
Cause 3: Your Offer Is Unclear
Test: read your homepage as a stranger. Can you tell, in ten seconds, what you sell, to whom and where?
Fix: state it plainly in the first lines. Create a page for each main service or product with concrete details. Vague slogans like “solutions for tomorrow” give an assistant nothing to match to a question.
Cause 4: Your Facts Conflict
Test: compare your address, prices, hours and services on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, review sites and directories.
Fix: pick one correct version and update every profile. Request corrections from third-party sites with outdated data. Conflicting facts can make an assistant hesitant or lead it to repeat the wrong version.
Cause 5: Nobody Else Mentions You
Test: for your key prompts, check which sources Perplexity and ChatGPT cite. Are you on any of those pages? Search your brand name, excluding your own site, and see how many independent mentions exist.
Fix: earn genuine presence: reviews from real customers, listings in respected directories, expert quotes in trade media, inclusion in fair comparison articles. Never buy fake reviews or spam forums. The trusted source guide has more ideas.
Cause 6: The Question Is Too Crowded
Test: are the answers to your target prompt filled with national brands or household names every time?
Fix: target narrower questions where you have a clear advantage: a location, a niche, a customer type or a specific problem. “Best accounting software” is crowded; “accounting software for French micro-entrepreneurs with VAT” may not be.
How to Record Your Findings
Make a simple table: cause, test result (pass or fail), fix, owner, date. Re-test after fixes. Remember that answers vary, so check several times before drawing conclusions. For a full measurement method, see measuring AI visibility.
When the Diagnosis Is Clean
If all six tests pass and you are still rarely mentioned, it is usually a matter of time and depth: more useful content, more genuine mentions, more consistent updates. There is no switch that forces inclusion.
