Is There a Ranking in AI Answers? How Order and Mentions Work
People talk about ranking first in ChatGPT, but AI answers do not work like a results page. Here is what position really means there.

AI answers do not have a fixed ranking like a search results page; the brands mentioned, and their order, can change between runs, users and model versions. It is more useful to think about how often you are mentioned across many attempts, and how you are described, than about a single position. That shift changes how you set goals and measure progress.
Why AI Answers Vary
A classic search engine returns a ranked list that stays fairly stable for a given query and location. An AI assistant generates text. Several things make that text differ from one time to the next:
- Sampling: language models choose words with some randomness, so wording and lists change.
- Prompt wording: “best CRM for agencies” and “which CRM should my 10-person agency use” can produce different brands.
- Live search: if the assistant searches the web, the results it finds may vary.
- Context: earlier messages in the conversation, user settings and location can shape the answer.
- Model updates: new versions change knowledge and style.
Does Order Matter at All?
Somewhat. Being named first or described in more detail likely gets more attention from the reader. But order is unstable. A brand listed first today may be third tomorrow on the same prompt. Chasing “position one” on a single prompt leads to frustration and misleading reports.
Better Ways to Think About “Ranking”
Mention Rate
Ask a prompt several times, across several assistants. In what share of answers do you appear? Being mentioned in most runs is a stronger result than being first once.
Prompt Coverage
Across your list of 30 or 50 buyer prompts, in how many do you appear at all? This shows breadth.
Description Quality
When mentioned, are you described correctly and positively? “A budget option” and “the specialist choice for agencies” lead to very different clicks.
Source Citations
For assistants that show sources, is your website, or a page about you, among them?
An Example
A garden design studio in Ghent checks “who designs small city gardens in Ghent” ten times across four assistants. It appears in six of ten answers, usually second or third, and is described accurately. A competitor appears in eight, often first. The useful takeaway is not “we rank third” but “we are mentioned less often than our main rival; let us find which sources they appear in that we do not.”
What Moves You Up Over Time
Factors that tend to raise your mention rate include clear pages answering the exact question, consistent facts across profiles, genuine reviews and presence in the sources assistants cite. The page on AI answer ranking factors goes through these one by one, and brand mention frequency covers tracking.
Beware of Rank Guarantees
Given how answers vary, nobody can promise you the top spot in an AI answer. Be cautious with any provider that guarantees a ranking or a date.
Setting Sensible Goals
Instead of a rank target, set goals such as: be mentioned in most runs for our ten core prompts, have zero factual errors in descriptions, and appear among cited sources for our three most valuable questions. These goals reflect how AI answers really behave and can be tracked month by month.
