AI Answer Box Strategy: How to Choose Which Questions to Target
You cannot win every AI answer. A good strategy picks the questions where you can realistically be included and where inclusion pays off.

A strong AI answer box strategy starts by choosing the right questions: those with high business value, where you have a genuine right to be mentioned and where competition in the answers is beatable. Spreading effort across every possible prompt wastes time. Scoring and prioritizing questions turns AI visibility into a focused plan.
What We Mean by “Answer Box”
An answer box is the AI-written summary that appears in response to a question, such as a Google AI Overview, a ChatGPT reply or a Perplexity answer with sources. Being “in the box” means being named or linked within that summary. Because space is tight, usually a few brands or sources, choosing where to compete matters.
Step 1: Collect Candidate Questions
Gather 50 or more questions from real sources: sales calls, support emails, reviews, search console queries, competitor FAQs and your own testing in assistants. Keep the buyer’s wording. “Which dog groomer in Utrecht handles anxious dogs?” is better than “dog grooming Utrecht”.
Step 2: Score Each Question
Give each question a score from 1 to 3 on four criteria:
- Business value: would someone asking this be close to buying from you?
- Right to win: do you genuinely offer the best fit? A specialist in anxious dogs has a strong right to win the example above.
- Answer gap: are current AI answers vague, outdated or missing good options?
- Effort: how much work to create a strong answer (score 3 for low effort)?
Add the scores. Start with the highest totals.
Step 3: Group Into Clusters
Questions that share an answer belong together. “Anxious dog grooming”, “grooming for nervous rescue dogs” and “calm dog groomer” can be served by one strong page plus supporting mentions. Clustering stops you writing ten thin pages for one need. See content clusters for LLM authority.
Step 4: Decide the Play for Each Cluster
- Own-page play: the answers draw on brand websites. Create the clearest page on the topic.
- Third-party play: the answers cite review sites, directories or articles. Focus on genuine presence there.
- Correction play: you appear but with wrong facts. Fix your sources and align profiles.
- Wait play: the question is dominated by huge brands with no gap. Park it and revisit later.
Step 5: Set Review Points
Check your priority clusters monthly. AI answers vary, so look at how often you appear over several checks. Re-score quarterly: new competitors, new products or new customer questions change the picture.
A Worked Example
A small B2B translation agency scores its questions. “Best translation agency” scores low on right to win and answer gap: big players dominate. “Certified legal translation German to French for court documents” scores high on all four. The agency builds one detailed page for it, gets listed in the relevant professional association’s directory, and asks recent legal clients for reviews. Its effort goes where inclusion is realistic.
Strategy Mistakes to Avoid
- Targeting only broad, prestige questions.
- Ignoring third-party sources when they are what the answers cite.
- Expecting results by a fixed date. No one can guarantee inclusion.
