Technical Setup for Global AI Visibility: A Step-by-Step Guide
If your website serves several countries, a few technical choices decide whether AI assistants understand which page fits which market. This guide walks through them in order.

The short answer
For AI assistants to recommend the right version of your business in each country, they must be able to reach your pages, tell which language and market each page is for, and find consistent facts across them. That comes down to crawler access, clear URL structure, hreflang tags, localised content and structured data.
Step 1: Check that AI crawlers can reach you
Open your robots.txt file and look for rules that block crawlers. Assistants with live web access, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot through Bing, need to fetch your pages. Some companies block AI crawlers by default through a security plugin or CDN setting without realising it. Decide deliberately which crawlers you allow, and check each country domain or subfolder separately because they sometimes have different settings.
Step 2: Choose one clear URL structure
Use one pattern and stick to it: country domains (example.de), subfolders (example.com/de/) or subdomains. Subfolders are often easiest to maintain because authority builds on one domain. Mixed patterns confuse both people and machines.
Step 3: Add hreflang correctly
Hreflang tags tell search engines which page is for which language and region, for example en-GB versus en-US. Because Google and Bing results feed assistants like Gemini and Copilot, getting hreflang right helps the correct page surface. Each version should point to all the others, including itself. Broken or one-way tags are a common reason the wrong country page shows up.

Step 4: Localise, do not just translate
A page for Germany should show euro prices, German contact details and the delivery terms that apply there. A page for Australia needs local currency and local time zones for support. AI assistants answer specific questions such as “does this company ship to Austria” or “price in pounds”, and they can only answer correctly if your page states the fact plainly.
- State prices in local currency, with tax treatment.
- List shipping countries and delivery times in a simple table or list.
- Give a local phone number or support hours in local time if you have them.
Step 5: Add structured data per market
Use Organization schema with your legal name, logo and official profiles, and LocalBusiness schema for any physical offices. Keep the same organisation details on every version so models see one company, not several. Our guide to schema markup for AI covers the details.
Step 6: Test in each language
Ask each assistant questions in the local language, such as “meilleur logiciel de facturation pour PME” in France. Note whether it names you, which page it cites, and whether the facts are current. Wrong currency or an outdated price usually points back to a page that is missing or unclear. If you sell into Europe, our page on AI visibility in the EU adds market-specific tips.
Step 7: Keep one source of truth for facts
Large sites often store prices, addresses and product specs in several places, and each country team edits its own copy. Over time the versions drift apart. Keep core facts in one central place, such as your CMS or product database, and feed every language version from it. When an assistant compares your German and English pages, they should agree on everything except language and local details. A short internal checklist for each new market launch, covering crawler access, hreflang, schema and local facts, saves a lot of clean-up later.
