AI hallucinations about a brand happen when an assistant fills a gap with something that sounds plausible but is not true. They are most common for smaller brands with little clear information online, or brands with names similar to others. You cannot switch hallucinations off, but you can reduce them by giving AI clear, consistent, easy-to-find facts that leave less room to guess.

What a brand hallucination looks like

Examples business owners often run into:

  • An assistant says your software has a mobile app when it does not.
  • It invents a founder name or merges two companies into one story.
  • It lists a product you discontinued years ago as current, or a product you never made.
  • It claims you offer free shipping worldwide when you only ship in the EU.
  • It describes a lawsuit or controversy that involved a different company with a similar name.

The last type can be serious. Treat any hallucination about legal, safety or financial matters as a priority.

Why AI makes things up

Language models predict likely text. When they have strong, repeated information about your brand, they usually repeat it correctly. When the information is thin, scattered or conflicting, they may blend in patterns from similar companies. Assistants that search the web can still misread a page or combine sources wrongly. Learn more in how AI models learn about companies.

Reduce the information gap

The best defence is a clear record. Publish:

  1. A factual About page: who you are, where you are based, when you started, what you sell and what you do not.
  2. A page listing your current products or services, and a note on discontinued ones.
  3. Clear policy pages: shipping regions, returns, pricing model, support hours.
  4. An FAQ that directly answers the questions AI got wrong, such as “Do you have a mobile app?” with a direct “No, not currently”.
  5. Organization structured data with links to your official profiles.

Short, direct sentences are easier for AI to quote than marketing language.

Separate yourself from look-alike brands

If the hallucination comes from name confusion, make the difference obvious. Use your full legal or trading name, your city and your sector together in key places. Keep your profiles on LinkedIn, business registries and relevant directories complete, so there are several sources that describe you specifically.

Report serious errors

Most AI products have a way to give feedback on an answer. For defamatory or harmful claims, check each provider’s help pages for their process on reporting harmful or inaccurate content about people or organisations, and keep records. Feedback does not guarantee a change, so pair it with fixing the information gap.

Monitor, do not just fix once

Hallucinations can change between versions and even between two runs of the same question. Ask the same set of brand questions across several assistants every month and log the answers. Our page on measuring AI visibility and brand mentions explains a simple tracking method. For general correction steps, see how to correct wrong business information in AI.
