Perplexity
AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity often describe a business by summarising what customers say about it in public. They do not have a private review feed. They read reviews that are visible on the open web, either through their training data or through live search. The more genuine, recent and consistent your reviews are across trusted sites, the better your chances of being described accurately and positively.
Where AI Assistants Find Review Information
When someone asks “is this plumber reliable?” or “what do people say about this hotel?”, an assistant looks for patterns across sources. Common ones include:
- Large review platforms such as Google reviews, Trustpilot, Tripadvisor and G2, depending on the industry.
- Review snippets and testimonials on your own website, if they are written as readable text.
- Industry directories that show ratings, such as Capterra for software or Houzz for home services.
- Articles, comparison posts and forum threads where customers talk about you.
Assistants that browse the web, such as Perplexity or ChatGPT with search, can show the pages they used. Others rely more on what they learned in training. In both cases, the review content has to be public and crawlable.
What AI Picks Up From Reviews
AI models are good at spotting themes. They do not just count stars. They notice repeated words such as “fast delivery”, “hard to reach support” or “great for beginners”. These themes often end up in the summary an assistant gives. That means the content of reviews matters as much as the rating.
You cannot write your customers’ words for them, but you can encourage detailed reviews. Ask customers what problem you solved and how it went. A review that says “they fixed our boiler on a Sunday in Lyon” gives an AI far more to work with than “great service”.
Practical Steps to Make Reviews Work for AI Visibility
- Pick two or three platforms that matter in your industry. Spread effort where buyers and AI already look, rather than across ten sites.
- Ask at the right moment. Send a short request right after a successful delivery or project, with a direct link to the review page.
- Reply to reviews in plain language. Public replies add context. A calm, specific reply to a complaint shows how you handle problems.
- Publish a reviews page on your site as text. Quote real reviews with the customer’s permission, and link to the original platform. Avoid putting reviews only inside images or widgets that crawlers cannot read.
- Use review markup carefully. Structured data can help search engines understand ratings, but follow each search engine’s rules about which reviews can be marked up. Our guide on JSON-LD for company information covers the basics.
What to Avoid
Fake reviews, paid reviews without disclosure and review swaps are risky. Platforms remove them, consumer protection rules in many countries ban them, and they can damage trust when exposed. They also tend to sound generic, which adds little to what an AI says about you. Gating reviews, where you only ask happy customers, breaks the rules of several platforms too.
The honest route is slower but lasts: deliver good work, ask every customer, and respond to what they say.
When AI Gets Your Reviews Wrong
Sometimes an assistant says you have “no reviews” or repeats an old complaint you have since fixed. This usually means your recent reviews are hard to find or spread across sites the assistant does not use. Check which sources the assistant cites, then strengthen your presence there. How Keboost Helps
Keboost tracks the questions customers ask AI assistants about your business and your competitors, and shows how each model describes you, including the review themes it repeats. It then helps you create clear, factual content that supports your real reputation so AI tools can find and cite it. We cannot change what customers write, and we never post reviews for you.
