Glossary and definition pages explain the terms used in your industry in plain language. They are useful for AI visibility because “what is…” questions are among the most common prompts, and assistants need short, accurate definitions to answer them. A clear glossary, written by people who know the field, gives AI tools a reliable source to draw from and links those concepts to your brand.

Why Definitions Work Well for AI

Definitions are compact, factual and stable. An assistant answering “what is a bill of lading?” needs one or two clear sentences, maybe an example, and the difference from similar terms. A page that delivers exactly that is easy to quote. Tools that show sources, like Perplexity, may link to it. Even when there is no link, a consistent definition across trusted sites shapes how a concept is explained.

Choose the Right Terms

Do not copy a generic dictionary. Pick terms that:

  • Your customers ask about in emails, calls and demos.
  • Appear in your product, contracts or pricing.
  • Are often confused with each other, such as “gross margin” vs “markup”.
  • Are new or changing, where existing explanations are thin or outdated.

A freight forwarder might define incoterms, demurrage and customs bonds. A dental clinic might define veneers, crowns and implants in patient-friendly words.

Write Each Definition in Layers

  1. One-sentence definition that stands on its own: “Demurrage is a fee charged when a shipping container stays at the port beyond the free time allowed.”
  2. Short explanation of how it works, in two to four sentences.
  3. A concrete example with realistic numbers, clearly labelled as an example.
  4. Related terms and how they differ, with links.
  5. Why it matters to the reader, and where your service fits, if it does.

Hub Page or Separate Pages?

For a few dozen short terms, one glossary hub page with anchor links works well. For important terms that deserve 300 words or more, create separate pages and link them from the hub. Separate pages are easier to match to specific questions. Connect them to your guides so they form part of a topic cluster, as described in content clusters for LLM authority.

Formatting Tips

  • Use the term itself as the heading, in the form people search for it.
  • Put the definition directly under the heading, not after an introduction.
  • Keep jargon out of the definition itself, or explain it.
  • Consider DefinedTerm markup from Schema.org for structured data, keeping it consistent with the visible text.
  • Show who wrote or reviewed the content and when it was last updated.

Keep Quality High

A glossary of 500 thin, auto-generated entries is unlikely to help and can make your site look low quality. Better to write 40 excellent definitions, reviewed by an expert, than 500 vague ones. Accuracy matters more than volume: if your definition contradicts standard sources without good reason, AI tools are less likely to rely on it. The page on how AI evaluates content quality explains why depth and accuracy matter.

Maintain It

Review definitions when laws, standards or your product change. Add new terms as customers start asking about them. Remove or redirect entries that are no longer relevant.
