AI systems do not use one public quality score, but their behaviour points to a clear pattern. Content that is specific, clearly structured, consistent with other sources, current, written by someone identifiable and supported by independent sites is more likely to be used in answers. Generic, outdated or contradictory content is more likely to be skipped.

Where “Quality” Gets Judged

There are two layers. First, the search systems that AI tools use to find live pages (Google, Bing and their own crawlers) rank and filter results. Second, the language model reads what it found and decides what to include in the answer. Both layers reward the same basic traits. Our page on how AI verifies information from multiple sources covers the second layer in depth.

Signal 1: Specificity

Concrete details give a model something to say. Compare “fast shipping” with “ships within 24 hours from our warehouse in Lille”. The second is quotable and checkable. Specific numbers, names, conditions and examples tend to make content more useful as a source.

Signal 2: Clarity and Structure

Clear headings, short paragraphs and direct answers make it easy to extract the right part. Pages that bury the answer under long introductions are harder to use, even if the information is good.

Signal 3: Agreement With Other Sources

When several independent sources say the same thing, a claim looks more reliable. When your own pages contradict each other, or your site disagrees with your directory listings, the model has a reason to hedge or pick another source.

Signal 4: Freshness Where It Matters

For prices, product features, laws and rankings, current information matters. Show a visible “last updated” date and actually update the content. For evergreen topics, freshness matters less than accuracy. See how AI uses content freshness and authority.

Signal 5: Who Wrote It

Named authors with relevant experience, a real About page and clear contact details all help readers and systems judge trust. Anonymous pages with no context are weaker.

Signal 6: Original Value

If your page says exactly what twenty other pages say, there is little reason to cite yours. Original data, first-hand testing, real pricing, expert opinion and detailed examples set content apart.

What Lowers Perceived Quality

  • Mass-produced pages that only swap a city or keyword.
  • Claims with no support, such as “the best in Europe”.
  • Broken pages, heavy pop-ups or content hidden behind scripts.
  • Fake reviews and testimonials, which can also harm your reputation when discovered.

A Quick Self-Review

  1. Would an expert in your field learn anything from this page?
  2. Is every important claim specific and checkable?
  3. Does it agree with your other pages and profiles?
  4. Is it clear who wrote it and when it was last updated?

A Practical Example

Two pages explain how to choose a commercial espresso machine. The first lists general tips found everywhere. The second, written by a named technician, compares boiler types with real maintenance costs, explains which models suit cafés serving under 100 cups a day, and states when the advice was last checked. The second gives AI tools specific, attributable facts, so it is the stronger candidate to be cited.
