To optimize for Google AI Overviews, start with solid Google SEO, because AI Overviews draw on pages in Google’s own index. Then make your pages easy to summarise: answer the question directly near the top, use clear headings and lists, show expertise and keep facts current. Google decides which sources to show, so you can improve your chances but not control the outcome.

What AI Overviews are

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google Search results. They answer the query in a few sentences or bullet points and show links to supporting sources. They tend to appear for informational and multi-part questions, such as “how to remove limescale from a shower head without vinegar”, more than for simple brand or navigation searches.

Step 1: Make sure you can rank at all

Because AI Overviews use Google’s index, the basics come first:

  • Pages are indexed (check in Google Search Console)
  • No accidental noindex or robots.txt blocks
  • Good mobile experience and reasonable speed
  • Helpful content written for people, not for search engines

Pages that already rank on page one for a query are more likely to be cited in its overview, though lower-ranked pages can appear too.

Step 2: Target the questions that trigger overviews

Search your main topics on Google and note which ones show an AI Overview. Look at the cited sources. Ask yourself what those pages do well and what they miss. Focus on queries where you can add something better or more specific.

Step 3: Write in a summary-friendly way

  1. Answer the main question in the first two or three sentences.
  2. Use headings phrased like the follow-up questions people have.
  3. Use numbered steps for processes and bullet lists for options.
  4. Add a small table when comparing prices, sizes or features.
  5. Define terms clearly in one sentence before explaining further.

Step 4: Show experience and trust

Google emphasises helpful, reliable content. Add the author’s name and relevant experience, cite reputable sources for facts, and include first-hand detail, like photos of your own work described in text, or tips that only practitioners know. For health, finance and legal topics, credentials matter even more.

Step 5: Use structured data correctly

Schema markup does not force inclusion in AI Overviews, but it helps Google understand your pages. Use Article, Product, LocalBusiness, HowTo-style content and FAQ sections where they genuinely fit, and keep markup consistent with what is visible on the page.

Step 6: Keep content fresh

For topics that change, such as prices, regulations or software features, update pages and show the date. Outdated details make a page a weaker source.

Step 7: Track and adjust

Search Console reports AI Overview impressions and clicks together with regular web results, so it will not show you AI Overviews separately. Keep a list of target queries and check them by hand or with a tool every few weeks. Record whether an overview appears, which sources it cites and whether you are among them.

Beyond Google

AI Overviews are one AI surface. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini may cite different sources for the same question. See how to rank in Gemini for Google’s assistant specifically.
