To prepare your website for AI search, make sure AI crawlers can access it, serve the main content in plain HTML, add structured data about your organisation and products, and rewrite key pages so they state facts and answers clearly. These steps help assistants that browse the web, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, read and quote your site accurately.
1. Check crawler access
Open your robots.txt file and look for rules that block bots. Common AI-related user agents include GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot (Anthropic), Google-Extended and Bingbot. Some control training use, others control search. Decide on purpose which ones to allow. Also check your firewall or CDN: bot protection sometimes blocks them silently. Our technical SEO for AI crawlers guide explains the details.
2. Make content readable without JavaScript
Many crawlers do not run JavaScript fully. If your prices, product descriptions or FAQs only appear after scripts load, a bot may see an empty page. Test by viewing the page source or using a text-only fetch. Server-side rendering or static HTML for key content is safest.
3. Add structured data
Schema markup tells machines what a page is about. Start with:
Organizationon the homepage, with name, logo, URL andsameAslinks to official profilesLocalBusinessif you serve a physical areaProductorServicewith price where relevantFAQPagefor genuine question-and-answer sectionsArticlewith author for blog posts
Keep the markup in line with what is visible on the page.
4. Strengthen the pages AI looks for
When an assistant researches a company, it often looks for the same few things. Make sure each has a clear page:
- About: who you are, founding year, location, team, what makes you different.
- Services or products: one page per main offer, with who it is for.
- Pricing: exact prices or honest ranges. Missing prices often lead AI to guess.
- Contact and locations: address, hours and service area in text, not only in an image.
- FAQ: real questions customers ask, answered in two or three sentences each.
5. Write answer-first content
Put the answer to the page’s main question in the first paragraph. Use descriptive headings (“How long does installation take?”) instead of clever ones. Use lists and tables for steps, specifications and comparisons. Short, factual sentences are easier to quote correctly.
6. Show who is behind the content
Add author names, short bios and credentials to articles. Link to the team page. Expertise signals help both search engines and AI judge whether a source is trustworthy.
7. Keep it fresh and consistent
Show “last updated” dates on important pages and actually update them. Make sure your site matches your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directory listings. Conflicting facts confuse AI.
8. Test what AI sees
Ask several assistants questions about your business and check their sources. If they quote an old page or a third-party site instead of yours, find out why. Our AI search optimization checklist gives a quick list to run through.
