Perplexity
Brands are losing traffic to AI answers because assistants and AI Overviews now answer many questions directly, so users get what they need without clicking a link. Pages that answered simple questions, such as definitions, how-tos and quick comparisons, are hit hardest. The traffic is not gone because your site got worse; the answer moved in front of it.
How the click disappears
Before, a search for “how long to boil an egg” showed links, and recipe sites got the visit. Now Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity write the answer in one line. Some show source links, but many users read and leave. This is often called zero-click behaviour. See zero-click traffic from AI answers for more.
Which pages lose the most
- Simple informational pages: definitions, conversions, short how-tos.
- Generic top-ten lists: “10 tips for better sleep” with nothing unique.
- Thin comparison pages: if they only repeat spec sheets, AI can summarise them.
- Blog posts written for keywords: long articles with a short answer buried inside.
Pages that tend to hold up better include those with original data, tools and calculators, detailed pricing, product pages, booking pages and content that requires trust, like expert advice with a named author.
Why it hurts more for some brands
If AI answers mention your competitors but not you, you lose twice: fewer clicks on your informational pages and fewer people hearing your name during research. Brands that are named in the answer still get awareness, even without a click, and often get the later, higher-intent visit.
What to do about it
1. Find out where the traffic went
Compare Search Console data for the last year. Look for pages where impressions stayed stable but clicks fell; this often points to AI Overviews or similar features. Then ask AI assistants the same questions and see who they name.
2. Aim to be the source, not just a result
If AI will summarise the topic anyway, make your page the one it relies on. Put the clear answer first, add facts others do not have, and name an expert author. Our guide on how to be the definitive source for AI covers this.
3. Get mentioned in the answer
For buying questions, being named matters more than being linked. That depends on reviews, third-party articles, directory listings and consistent facts, not just your own blog.
4. Shift effort toward high-intent pages
Invest in pages people need to visit: pricing, demos, product details, quotes, local service pages and comparison pages written honestly.
5. Measure beyond clicks
Track brand searches, direct visits and AI mentions. A drop in blog traffic alongside steady leads may mean AI is sending informed buyers who arrive later through other routes.
What not to do
Do not block all AI crawlers in anger without thinking it through. Blocking may keep your content out of some training, but it can also keep you out of answers that cite live web pages. Decide per bot based on your goals.
A quick example
Imagine a garden centre that wrote a popular guide on “when to plant tulip bulbs”. Clicks fall because the AI Overview now gives the answer in one line. But when people ask an assistant “which garden centre near Ghent sells good tulip bulbs?”, the answer depends on reviews, listings and local mentions. Shifting effort from the generic guide to local reputation and product pages protects the visits that lead to sales.
