Keyword research for AI queries means finding the full questions people type or speak into AI assistants, not just short search terms. These prompts are longer, include context like budget or team size, and often ask for a recommendation. Once you know them, you can create content that answers them clearly and gives AI systems a reason to mention you.
How AI Prompts Differ From Search Keywords
A classic search might be “project management software”. The same person asking an AI assistant might write: “What is the best project management tool for a 12-person design agency that already uses Slack and Google Drive?”
That prompt tells you three things a keyword never did: the size of the team, the industry and the tools they already use. AI assistants answer these details, so your content should cover them too.
Step 1: Collect Real Questions
Do not guess. Gather the words your buyers already use:
- Sales calls and demos: note the first question each prospect asks.
- Support tickets: look for “can I”, “does it”, “how do I” questions.
- Search Console: filter for queries of six words or more. Long queries often look like AI prompts.
- Your site search: what people type into your own search box.
- Public communities: read, do not post, in forums and subreddits where your buyers talk.
Step 2: Expand Them Into Prompt Variations
Take each question and write the ways different buyers might ask it. Change one variable at a time:
- Role: “as a freelance accountant…” vs “as a finance manager at a 200-person company…”
- Constraint: budget, location, language, existing tools.
- Intent: learning (“how does X work”), comparing (“X vs Y”), or choosing (“which X should I buy”).
You can ask an AI assistant itself to suggest variations. Treat the output as ideas to check, not as data about real demand.
Step 3: Prioritise by Buying Intent
Not every prompt is worth a page. Score each one on two simple questions: Is the person close to choosing a provider? Does your business genuinely fit the answer? Prompts like “best”, “alternative to”, “for small teams” and “in [city]” usually signal someone ready to decide. Our guide to “alternatives to” content covers one of the strongest of these groups.
Step 4: Check What AI Already Says
Ask your top prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot. For each answer, record:
- Which brands are named, and in what order.
- Which sources are cited, where the tool shows them (Perplexity shows source links, for example).
- Whether facts about you are correct.
Answers vary between sessions and over time, so run each prompt more than once and look for patterns rather than a single result.
Step 5: Map Prompts to Content
Group related prompts into topics, and give each topic one strong page. A comparison page can answer ten “X vs Y” prompts. A pricing page can answer “how much does…” prompts. Then link those pages together so the topic is easy to follow, as explained in our page on content clusters for LLM authority.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing high-volume generic terms you cannot credibly answer.
- Writing one page per tiny wording change. This creates thin, repetitive content.
- Ignoring sources. If AI tools cite review sites or industry publications for your topic, your plan should include earning a fair presence there too.
