To optimize for ChatGPT search, make sure its crawler can reach your pages, write pages that answer specific questions in plain sentences, and keep your brand facts consistent across the web. ChatGPT can browse the web and show source links, so pages that are accessible, clear and trusted by other sites have a better chance of being used. Nobody can guarantee a citation, but these steps improve the odds.
How ChatGPT Search Finds Pages
When ChatGPT searches, it runs queries on the web, reads a set of results and writes a summary with links. Two things follow from that:
- Your page has to be findable by search, which means being indexed by major search engines, including Bing.
- Your page has to be readable by OpenAI’s crawlers, which means your server and
robots.txtshould not block them.
Separately, what ChatGPT “knows” without searching comes from its training data. That part changes slowly and depends on how widely your brand was discussed online.
Step 1: Check Crawler Access
Open your robots.txt and look for rules that block OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User or GPTBot. OpenAI documents these user agents and what each is for. Also check your firewall or CDN, since some bot protection tools block AI crawlers by default. Our AI crawler user-agent list has the common names in one place.
Step 2: Get Indexed in Bing
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and check for crawl errors. Many site owners only watch Google Search Console and never notice that key pages are missing from Bing.
Step 3: Write Pages That Answer One Question Well
ChatGPT summarises. It needs a clear sentence it can lift. For each important page:
- Pick the exact question a buyer types, such as “Which accounting software works for a freelancer in France?”
- Answer it in the first two or three sentences.
- Back it up with specifics: prices, features, limits, locations, who it is for and who it is not for.
- Use descriptive headings so each section can stand on its own.
Vague marketing lines (“innovative solutions for modern teams”) give the model nothing to quote.
Step 4: Build Mentions Beyond Your Own Site
When ChatGPT compares options, it often leans on review sites, comparison articles, industry publications and community discussions. Earn honest mentions there: get listed in relevant directories, contribute expert comments to trade media, and encourage real customers to leave reviews on the platforms your industry uses. Avoid fake reviews or planted forum posts; they are against platform rules and can damage trust in your brand.
Step 5: Test the Prompts Your Buyers Use
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with search on. Note which sources it cites and which competitors appear. Those cited pages show you what kind of content is being trusted for your topic. Repeat monthly, because answers change. For a wider view of the platform, read how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Step 6: Keep Key Pages Current
Search-based answers favour information that looks up to date. Review your pricing, product and location pages at least once a quarter. Show a visible “last updated” date and change it only when the content really changes. If you retire a product or service, update or redirect the page instead of leaving old details online, because ChatGPT may keep finding and repeating them.
