Perplexity
AI models learn about companies from public text. During training they absorb patterns from a large snapshot of websites, articles, books and discussions. After training, many assistants can also search the web to read current pages. A company that is clearly and widely described in public sources is better known to the model; a company with little public coverage may be unknown or described wrongly.
Stage 1: Pre-Training on Public Text
A model is trained on a very large collection of text. It does not store a neat file for each company. Instead, it learns statistical links: which names appear with which words, places and topics. If many sources write “Boulangerie Rose, the organic bakery in Toulouse known for sourdough”, the model picks up that pattern.
Important limits:
- Training stops at a cutoff date. Anything after that is not in the model’s memory.
- Rarely mentioned companies leave only weak traces.
- Companies cannot submit their information to training, and there is no paid route into it.
Stage 2: Fine-Tuning and Safety Training
After pre-training, developers refine models to follow instructions and be helpful and careful. This shapes how a model talks about companies: for example, being cautious about unverified claims, or suggesting the user check details. It does not usually add specific knowledge about your business.
Stage 3: Live Retrieval
Many assistants can look things up while answering. ChatGPT can browse, Perplexity searches for most questions, Gemini can use Google Search and Copilot uses Bing. When this happens, the model reads your current website, listings and coverage. This is how a new company, a new product or a price change can show up in AI answers well before the next model update.
Why Some Companies Are “Known” Better
Compare two similar plumbing firms. Firm A has a basic website, no reviews and one directory listing. Firm B has detailed service pages, a complete maps listing with many real reviews, a mention in a local news story and a profile on a trade association site. When asked “reliable emergency plumber in Rennes”, an assistant has far more to work with for Firm B. Size is not the deciding factor; public documentation is.
Common Gaps and Errors
- Outdated facts: the model remembers an old address or old pricing from training.
- Mix-ups: two businesses with similar names get merged.
- Missing products: newer offers are unknown because they launched after the cutoff.
- Thin descriptions: the model knows you exist but not what makes you different.
Most of these are fixed through live-search sources first, then gradually in future model versions as the public web catches up. See updating brand information across the AI web.
What You Can Do
- Publish clear facts on your own site. An About page, service pages and a pricing page with plain statements.
- Get documented elsewhere. Directories, reviews, trade press, partner sites and interviews.
- Stay consistent. Use the same name, category and details in every place.
- Be crawlable. Allow the crawlers you want to read your public pages and keep content in HTML.
- Keep it current. Update public information whenever something changes.
