Perplexity
Large language models discover brands in two ways: from the text they were trained on, and from live web results they fetch when answering. They tend to trust a brand when many independent, reliable sources describe it the same way. A single page on your own website is rarely enough on its own.
Discovery Route 1: Training Data
Models are trained on a large snapshot of public text. If your brand was discussed in articles, reviews, directories and forums before that snapshot, the model may “know” you. If you are new, or rarely written about, it may know nothing or mix you up with a similar name. You cannot submit data to this process. The only way in is to be written about publicly in places that are widely read.
Discovery Route 2: Live Retrieval
Many assistants can search the web while answering. Perplexity shows its source links, ChatGPT can browse, Gemini can draw on Google Search and Copilot uses Bing. Here, the model finds you the same way a search engine does: your pages must be indexed, crawlable and relevant to the question. This route is faster. A good new page can be picked up within days or weeks, not months.
What Builds Trust
Agreement between sources
If your website, your LinkedIn page, a trade directory and two reviews all say “Lyon-based bookkeeping firm for restaurants”, the model can state that with confidence. If one says Lyon and another says Grenoble, it may hedge or skip you. See how AI verifies information from multiple sources.
Independent voices
What others say about you carries more weight than what you say about yourself. Customer reviews, press coverage, podcast mentions and inclusion in “best of” lists all count as outside signals.
Reputable domains
A mention in a known industry publication or a large directory is more likely to be crawled and used than a post on an unknown site.
Specific, checkable details
Concrete facts such as founding year, address, services, price range and named team members make a brand look real and easy to describe. Vague marketing language gives the model nothing to repeat.
What Breaks Trust
- Old addresses, prices or product names still live on third-party sites.
- Several company names or spellings in use at once.
- Review profiles that look manipulated, which can lead platforms to remove reviews.
- Pages that block crawlers or hide key text behind logins or scripts.
Trust is not a single switch. It builds slowly as more sources line up, and it can drop when conflicting information spreads. A rebrand, a move or a new pricing model are the moments when brands most often lose clarity in AI answers, because old pages keep circulating long after the change.
A Trust-Building Routine
- Write a one-paragraph “brand fact sheet”: name, what you do, for whom, where, since when.
- Audit the top 15 places your brand appears online and align them with that fact sheet.
- Add Organization structured data to your site with the same facts. Our page on JSON-LD for company information explains how.
- Earn two or three new independent mentions each month: a directory, a guest article, a customer story on a partner’s site.
- Ask AI assistants about your brand regularly and note what they get wrong.
